Description
Nyanko Big is the family cat of the Tada household in the anime Tada Never Falls in Love. He is a stray cat that Mitsuyoshi Tada found and adopted roughly ten years before the events of the series. When Nyanko Big was a kitten, Mitsuyoshi discovered him crying in the garden and brought him home, naming him with the wish that he would grow big. Despite being male, he is known to the neighborhood as Miiko-chan, and he serves as a familiar presence and informal mascot of the Tada family coffee shop. By the time the story takes place, he is over ten years old and has lived with the family for most of Mitsuyoshi's life.
In terms of personality, Nyanko Big is reserved and wary around strangers, and he shows open hostility toward certain people, such as Kaoru Ijuuin and Kentaro Yamashita, even though Yamashita keeps trying to get close to him. He warms up quickly to others, including Teresa Wagner and Charles de Loire, whom he takes to on first meeting. He has a hearty appetite and tends to overestimate how far he can jump, which leads to clumsy mishaps, and he has a treasured toy that he treats as a girlfriend. Although the audience hears his thoughts through a deep, dignified inner voice, other characters simply experience him as an ordinary cat.
Nyanko Big's core motivation is his self-appointed role as Mitsuyoshi's guardian. Because Mitsuyoshi lost his parents at a young age, Nyanko Big considers himself responsible for watching over him, a duty he has effectively sworn to Mitsuyoshi's late parents. He is proud of Mitsuyoshi, the person who saved him as a kitten, and takes satisfaction in seeing him grow and work toward his dream of becoming a photographer. This protective instinct appears in small daily routines, such as his habit of waking Mitsuyoshi in the morning.
In the story, Nyanko Big is a recurring member of the Tada household and often serves as a quiet observer of the people around him. He has an internet blog, the Terrifying Nyanko Big Blog, which Mitsuyoshi updates, and through it he has become a popular online presence. His actions occasionally drive the plot as well; in one episode, he disappears while visiting Cherry, the cat kept at a local beauty salon, and his failure to come home triggers a search by the family and their friends.
Among his key relationships, the strongest is with Mitsuyoshi, whom he regards with both affection and a sense of duty. He also shares a close bond with Yui, Mitsuyoshi's younger sister, who worries deeply about him when he goes missing. Teresa, who catches him when he falls from a tree in the park, is another person he grows attached to, and he is immediately friendly toward Charles. In contrast, he remains standoffish with Kaoru and Yamashita.
Nyanko Big does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation over the course of the series, but he is shown to gradually expand his circle of trust as new people enter Mitsuyoshi's life. His ongoing presence provides a sense of continuity and home for the Tada family. His notable traits include his narrating inner voice, his neighborhood patrols, and his popularity as the Tada coffee shop's mascot, all of which make him a distinctive and recognizable figure in the series.
