TV-Series
Description
Kentarō Yamashita is a first-year high school student and a member of the photography club at Koinohoshi High School. He shares a history with the club's main protagonist, Mitsuyoshi Tada, having attended the same middle school and looking up to Tada as a respected senior. This deep admiration is a core component of his personality, leading him to follow Tada faithfully and respond immediately whenever he hears Tada’s distinctive finger whistle. Because of this loyal and eager-to-please behavior, his friends have affectionately given him the nickname Yamashita Dog, which plays on the similar sound of his surname and the Japanese word for dog, ken.
His personality is characterized by an earnest and energetic nature that is often compared to that of a friendly, devoted puppy. He is the only first-year in the photography club, and he approaches his upperclassmen with genuine respect. Kentarō has a slim and tall build with fluffy brown hair that he typically keeps clipped back, and his eyes are a noticeable yellow color. As a member of the photography club, he shares a keen interest in capturing images; his personal camera is a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF7. His primary motivation within the group is to be useful to Tada and to participate fully in club activities.
In the story, Kentarō serves as a supportive member of the main friend group, providing loyalty and moments of lighthearted humor. One of his most notable struggles involves his paradoxical relationship with animals. He genuinely loves animals and desires to befriend them, particularly Nyanko Big, the neighborhood cat that is often around the club members. Unfortunately, animals seem to universally dislike him, and he is frequently scratched or rejected by them, a running gag that underscores his dog-like but unlucky persona.
His key relationships revolve around his fellow club members. He has a strong and devoted bond with Mitsuyoshi Tada, built on years of senior-junior respect. He interacts with other members like Kaoru Ijuuin and Hajime Sugimoto as a lively junior member of their eccentric group. He is also shown trying to build a friendship with Yui Tada, the protagonist's younger sister who works at the family coffee shop. However, Kentarō remains completely unaware that Yui has a crush on him. Another subtle aspect of his personal life is his fondness for the owner of a local beauty salon, though she views him only as a younger brother figure.
Regarding his development throughout the series, Kentarō primarily maintains his consistent role as the loyal, energetic underclassman. While the central romance focuses on other characters, he contributes to the group's dynamic with his unwavering support and comedic misfortunes. His notable abilities are not combat or skill-based but rather his near-instantaneous response to Tada's whistle and his capacity for cheerful persistence, even when his attempts at friendliness are met with scratches from a hostile cat or unreturned affection.
