Description
Eiji Okumura is a nineteen-year-old Japanese college student who travels to New York City while working as an assistant to the photographer Shunichi Ibe. Before his time in New York, Eiji was a competitive pole vaulter, but an injury forced him into an early retirement from the sport. This background as an athlete contributes to his physical fitness and agility, though his demeanor is gentle and his appearance is often noted as youthful, sometimes leading others to mistake him for being younger than he is.
In terms of personality, Eiji is characterized by his kindness, selflessness, and a strong sense of curiosity about the world around him. Despite being naive about the violent realities of gang life in America, he possesses a quiet bravery and a notable stubborn streak. He is also highly perceptive and emotionally intuitive, able to sense when someone is being dishonest or is in pain. This emotional authenticity often has a calming effect on even the most dangerous individuals, allowing him to form unlikely bonds.
Within the narrative, Eiji's primary role is to provide a stark contrast to the violent world of the protagonist, Ash Lynx. He represents a sense of peace and normalcy that is foreign to Ash's life. His motivations shift from simply assisting with a photographic report on street gangs to a deep-seated desire to understand and protect Ash, refusing to return to the safety of Japan despite the escalating danger. As the story progresses, Eiji moves from a passive observer to an active participant, demonstrating resourcefulness in crisis situations, such as when he uses his pole-vaulting skills to escape a warehouse and alert the police.
Eiji’s key relationships focus on his profound bond with Ash Lynx, which forms the emotional core of the story. Ash, who is typically distrustful and closed off, immediately allows Eiji to hold his gun, a gesture of trust he has never offered anyone else. Their relationship deepens into a mutual dependence where Ash views Eiji as his sole weakness and Eiji becomes a source of unwavering support, helping Ash confront his trauma and self-loathing. His other significant relationships include his guardian Shunichi Ibe, who refers to him as "Ei-chan"; his close friendship with the gang leader Shorter Wong; and a tense, resentful dynamic with Yut-Lung, who is jealous of Eiji's effortless connection with Ash.
Eiji undergoes notable development from a sheltered young man nursing the wounds of a lost athletic career into a more assertive and determined individual. He evolves from being someone who needs protection to someone who actively fights to stand by Ash's side, even practicing how to use a gun. While his kindness remains his defining trait, he gains a hardened resolve in the face of tragedy and loss. In terms of abilities, Eiji’s most prominent skill is his former expertise in pole vaulting, which he uses at a critical moment to save himself and others. Though initially unable to fight, he learns to handle a firearm under Ash's guidance. His greatest ability, however, is his emotional intelligence and his capacity to offer unconditional support, acting as a moral compass and a source of healing for those around him.
