TV-Series
Description
Maeda Toushirou is a Tantou, or short sword, forged by the Awataguchi school swordsmith Yoshimitsu. His name is derived from his history of being passed down through the generations of the Maeda clan of Kaga, having been owned by Maeda Toshimasa, the second son of the feudal lord Maeda Toshiie. As his background is tied to a specific historical family, he is one of the many Toushirou brothers within the Awataguchi lineage, a group that includes other swords like Hirano, Atsushi, and Yagen Toushirou.
In terms of personality, Maeda Toushirou is characterized by his refined, tender, and calm demeanor. He is consistently polite and speaks with respectful language to others within the citadel. This considerate nature is partly attributed to his historical use as a close-protection blade, which often placed him in the personal chambers of his owners, including those of women. This experience has made him very attentive to the needs and feelings of those around him. Among his many siblings, he is noted for being particularly caring and concerned for his brothers, often acting as a stabilizing and protective presence.
His primary motivation and core philosophy revolve around the protection of life. Maeda firmly believes that the safety and survival of his master, the Saniwa, is more important than the outcome of any battle. This defines his role not as a primary aggressor but as a dedicated guardian. He sees his duty as serving faithfully over a long period, as he states, "though my deeds are unremarkable, I shall serve you in perpetuity". His past experiences have also instilled in him a deep-seated sadness regarding the mortality of humans, as he witnessed his previous owner, Maeda Toshimasa, pass away and leave him behind.
Within the story of Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Maeda occupies the role of a supportive and reliable member of the citadel community. As one of the earlier swords to have manifested at the citadel, he is well-settled into the daily, peaceful routines that the series emphasizes. He participates in various activities, from training exercises to playful moments in the snow, and does not crave conflict or death, preferring the harmonious life granted to him and the other sword warriors.
His key relationships are predominantly with his Awataguchi brothers. He is frequently seen interacting with swords like Hirano Toushirou, with whom he shares a similar history and appearance, and Gokotai. In one instance, when his brother Namazuo Toushirou tries to blame another sibling, Yagen, for a disturbance, Maeda is shown defending Yagen, demonstrating his loyalty and sense of justice within the family. He cares deeply for the well-being of all his siblings, even those who are more rambunctious.
In terms of development, while his core personality remains gentle and steadfast, his resolve is shown to have depth. Reflecting on the loss of his former master, he has forged a clear sense of purpose: to use his abilities to protect humans from harm, even at great personal cost. He treasures a keepsake from his previous owner, a poorly fitting helmet, as a symbol of this commitment. His abilities as a Tantou are suited for close-quarters combat, where his greatest asset is not overwhelming power but his agility and his unwavering focus on defense, particularly the defense of the Saniwa.
