Description
Dōdanuki Masakuni is a tsukumogami, a sword spirit, who resides at the Hanamaru Citadel. He manifests from a blade forged by the swordsmith Dōdanuki Fujiwara Masakuni from the Kyushu Higo school. His physical form reflects his practical origins, with a sturdy build that incorporates almost no decorative elements, speaking to a creator who prioritized function over aesthetics. This focus on utility is central to his identity. The historical proof of his strength is the famous incident during an imperial inspection in the Meiji era when he was the only sword capable of cutting through a steel helmet.

In terms of personality, Dōdanuki presents himself as extremely courageous, vigorous, and direct. His manner of speaking is rough and boorish, and he has a distinctly masculine, straightforward way of carrying himself. He is, by nature, utilitarian and single-minded about his purpose as a weapon. He believes that being strong, sturdy, and useful is the highest virtue, and he becomes annoyed or disdainful when assigned tasks he deems unsuitable for a tool of war, such as fieldwork. However, this brusque exterior hides a more considerate and firm side. According to comments from his portrayal, there is an appealing gap in his character, and it is hinted that he may unexpectedly have a fondness for sweets. In the daily life of the citadel, he often focuses on strength training and can be seen doing exercises like pull-ups, with his personal quarters filled with equipment and his purchases centered on practical items like protein powder. Despite his tough demeanor, he is capable of relaxing and has even been seen roasting sweet potatoes for the smaller tantō swords.

Dōdanuki's primary motivation stems from a deep-seated fear of being discarded when no longer useful. As an amalgamation representing the entire line of Dōdanuki Masakuni swords rather than a single famous blade, he is acutely aware that many swords of his lineage were melted down or left to rust in warehouses during peaceful eras when artistic value became more prized than cutting ability. This history drives his desire to constantly prove his worth on the battlefield. He clings to the one great feat attributed to his name—cutting the steel helmet—and even carries the split helmet with him as a symbol of his proven strength. One of his battle cries, a reference to the 1.50 centimeters the blade sank into the helmet, further underscores this pride.

Within the story of the Hanamaru citadel, he is the twenty-second sword obtained by the Saniwa, or master. His role is that of a reliable combatant who gives his all in every battle. Despite his love for fighting, he ironically hates leadership and complains when placed as the captain of a unit, feeling far more comfortable being part of a team and following orders. He does not crave attention and will even apologize if he is named the Most Valuable Player in a sortie, as he does not wish to steal the spotlight. His key relationships are defined by his difficulty with social interaction. He wants to get along with the other swords and be considered a useful part of the citadel, but his gruff nature and lack of social graces often make this difficult. He tries various methods to connect with others, not always successfully, though his genuine, straightforward nature ultimately makes him a solid and trustworthy ally.

In terms of development, Dōdanuki shows a subtle but present desire to grow beyond just being a weapon, even if he struggles to express it. His attempts to befriend others, however clumsy, indicate a recognition that being liked is also a form of being useful. He accepts that the ultimate goal of war is peace and does not resist the flow of time, even if peaceful eras leave him with nothing to do. He has accepted that a death on the battlefield would suit him, preferring that end to rusting away in obscurity.

Regarding notable abilities, Dōdanuki is a highly capable swordsman with a focus on practical combat rather than any specific stylistic form. As a tsukumogami, his physical body is heartier than a human's; he can take more damage, heal faster, and survive longer without food or sleep. His true body is the sword itself; if the sword is severely damaged, he will perish, though injuries to his physical form can also be reflected in nicks and cuts on the blade. He has minimal spiritual recognition, able to vaguely sense other spirits. A unique, if inconvenient, manifestation of his spiritual energy is the spontaneous summoning of cherry blossom petals when he is in particularly good spirits or high condition, a phenomenon that is a pain to clean up.
