Description
Midare Toushirou is a tantou, or short sword, forged by the renowned smith Awataguchi Yoshimitsu and one of the many Toushirou brothers belonging to the Awataguchi school. His name derives from the unusual midare hamon, a disorderly blade pattern that sets him apart from his fellow Toushirou blades. This distinctive appearance is reflected in his highly feminine look: he has shoulder-length strawberry-blonde hair, large blue eyes, and wears a frilled dress-like combat uniform paired with a hat and black thigh-high stockings, leading many to initially mistake him for a girl. Despite this, he is unequivocally a male touken danshi.
Midare's personality is cheerful, friendly, and playfully teasing, often making lighthearted or suggestive comments. However, there is a more complex side to him; at times his eyes take on a dangerous, sharp glint, hinting at an underlying intensity. His motivations are closely tied to his loyalty toward the Saniwa, the spiritual leader who manifests the swords. In Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Midare undergoes a notable character arc when he encounters his previous historical owner, the warlord Hosokawa Katsumoto. This meeting leads him to confront the reality that humans are inherently flawed. Worried that the Saniwa might also become tainted by such imperfection, he returns to the citadel changed, having gained a deeper, more wary understanding of human nature. This experience alters his perspective and adds a layer of emotional depth to his normally carefree demeanor.
Within the story, Midare serves as a supporting character among the Awataguchi siblings, frequently interacting with his fellow Toushirou brothers such as Hirano Toushirou, Atsushi Toushirou, and others. His role often involves moments of levity and mischief, but his development emphasizes his growing attachment to his current master and his concern for the Saniwa's well-being. In terms of abilities, as a tantou, Midare is swift and agile in battle, and his distinctive midare hamon is reflected in his combat style and visual design. His quickness and skill make him a reliable fighter, though his smaller stature means he excels in speed over raw power. Overall, Midare Toushirou is a character defined by his deceptive appearance, his playful yet perceptive nature, and a meaningful journey toward understanding the complexities of the humans he vows to protect.
