Description
Houchou Toshirou is a character from the anime Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, representing a tantou, or short sword, originally forged by the Awataguchi school of swordsmiths. The historical blade was created in the Kamakura period and its name, meaning "kitchen knife," is said to originate from a famous cook who carved a crane with it. The sword was once owned by the powerful shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, a connection that heavily influences his personality. After being passed down within the Tokugawa family, the blade was damaged in the Great Fire of Meireki.
In appearance, Houchou Toshirou has short brown hair and brown eyes, often sporting a pink hairclip. He wears a military-style uniform with shorts, similar to his many "brothers" from the Awataguchi school, but he distinguishes himself with a yellow necktie and colorful Japanese armor on his right side. He also carries a messenger bag, which is revealed to be filled with candy.
His personality is notably mischievous and cheerful, often acting in a sociable and sometimes teasing manner. His most defining trait is a strong liking for both sweets and married women. This latter preference is a direct reference to his former owner, Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was known for his reputation as a womanizer. This combination often results in him seeking attention from women or those who remind him of a maternal figure, with the implication that the offer of candy is a primary motivator for his behavior.
Within the story of Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Houchou Toshirou is one of the many swords living in the citadel who are tasked with protecting history. He arrives at the citadel alongside another new sword, Monoyoshi Sadamune. His role often involves interacting with his fellow swords, particularly his many brothers from the Awataguchi school, including Honebami Toshirou, Ichigo Hitofuri, and Hakata Toshirou. One notable event in the season involves him arguing with Ichigo Hitofuri before going on a fishing trip with Urashima Toushirou, where they end up lost.
As a character, Houchou Toshirou exhibits a degree of development as he learns to navigate his relationships with the other swords. While he may initially appear self-centered or demanding, his underlying innocence and youthful nature become apparent, and he often requires guidance from the more experienced members of the citadel. He acts as a younger brother figure to many, balancing his playful mischief with a surprising level of bravery and determination when the situation calls for it. As a tantou, his notable abilities in combat are suited for short-range fighting, and his historical background as a treasured blade passed down through a prominent family contributes to his spiritual power and significance within the group.
