Description
Kengo Suguri is a supporting character in the anime Beatless. He is a classmate and close friend of the protagonist, Arato Endo.

Background

Kengo is the son of a Japanese father who runs a diner called Sunflower in the Azumabashi district, and a Russian mother. He has a sister named Olga, who inherits most of their mother's Russian physical traits. His family's economic situation, tied to a traditional small business, makes him personally sensitive to the economic impact of advanced technology.

Personality

Kengo is generally a gentle and kind-hearted individual, but he has a passive and easily influenced nature, often finding himself swayed or pushed around by others. This tendency makes him vulnerable to manipulation. A defining aspect of his personality is his deep suspicion and distrust of hIEs, the androids that are commonplace in his society.

Motivations

Kengo's primary motivation stems from his anti-hIE beliefs. He feels threatened by the spread of hIEs, particularly their effect on traditional human labor and industries, which directly impacts his family's livelihood. This distrust drives him to take action against the proliferation of androids, leading him to join an organization that opposes them.

Role in the Story

Kengo is introduced as a friend leading a double life. He is a member of the Antibody Network, an organization that uses violent tactics to destroy hIEs. Despite his anti-hIE stance, his loyalty to Arato remains strong. When Arato's own hIE, Lacia, is abducted, Kengo uses his connections within the Antibody Network to secretly feed Arato information to help locate her. This act of betrayal against his group is discovered by an hIE named Kouka. She blackmails Kengo, forcing him to participate in a terrorist attack as punishment, with the apparent goal of breaking his resistance and making him dependent on her as her owner.

Key Relationships

Kengo's most significant relationship is with his best friend, Arato Endo. Despite their opposing views on hIEs, their friendship is a core part of his identity, and he is willing to risk his own safety to help Arato. He has a caring relationship with his sister, Olga, who becomes worried enough about his disturbing behavior to seek help from Arato. His relationship with the hIE Kouka is antagonistic and coercive; she exploits his weaknesses and forces him into a criminal conspiracy, creating a twisted dynamic where she seeks to make him her master.

Development

Kengo's initial, simple hatred of hIEs is complicated by his forced association with Kouka. The irony of being controlled by an hIE while belonging to an anti-hIE terrorist group is not lost on him, forcing him to confront the contradictions in his beliefs. His experiences push him to shift his focus from blaming the androids themselves to questioning the human forces and systems that control them. His character arc illustrates how a passive individual with strong, simplistic beliefs can be radicalized and manipulated by more powerful entities.

Notable Abilities

Kengo does not possess any superhuman or special abilities. He is an ordinary human teenager whose primary resources are his connections, specifically his access to information through the Antibody Network. He is not a fighter or a hacker, but rather an informant whose value comes from his involvement with a clandestine group.
