Description
Narumi Tōi is a top-level high school beach volleyball player and a former partner of Kanata Higa. She is a serious, phlegmatic, and cool-headed person who believes that success comes only through hard work, a philosophy she derived from Kanata's earlier teachings. This belief is summed up in her personal motto, "There is no such thing as aces." Despite her stoic exterior, she carries emotional scars from the dissolution of her partnership with Kanata, which occurred when Kanata quit beach volleyball after her parents' death and her own struggles with her height. Narumi initially reacts to this abandonment with coldness and resentment, but her underlying care for Kanata remains.
In the story, Narumi serves as an early rival and catalyst for the main characters. Her unexpected challenge to Haruka and Kanata forces both girls to confront their insecurities and sparks Kanata's return to the sport. She is part of a highly skilled pair with Ayasa Tachibana, known as the "Naruaya" pair, and attends Fukuchiyama Academy in Kyoto. Her team is recognized as one of the strongest in the high school beach volleyball scene, often referred to as the "Valkyries" of their school. Narumi is also sometimes called the "idol of the beach volleyball world" because of her combination of talent and appearance.
Physically, Narumi has medium-length black hair and yellow eyes. Her playing style is disciplined and tactical, relying on solid fundamentals and strategic play rather than raw power or flashy moves. She is an excellent defensive player with a strong serve and precise ball placement.
Her most important relationships are with Kanata, whom she initially distances herself from but later reconciles with as Kanata regains her confidence, and with Ayasa, who complements her serious nature with a more relaxed demeanor. Over the course of the series, Narumi gradually softens her attitude toward Kanata and begins to rekindle their friendship, showing that she values their shared history and the passion for beach volleyball that once united them. Her character development centers on learning to trust again and letting go of past grudges, ultimately becoming a supportive rival rather than a hostile one.
