Description
Mao is an esper from a dystopian future, created by a shadowy organization as a genetically modified living weapon. She possesses telekinetic powers that allow her to manipulate physical matter with her mind, and her abilities are roughly equal in strength to those of Anzu, though she excels in endurance and creative application rather than raw destructive force. Mao was the first esper produced by the organization, created through the cloning of an original subject.

Her backstory begins when she is sent back in time to retrieve Hina and Anzu, two other espers who had escaped to the present day. However, her arrival pod lands on a deserted island instead of its intended destination, stranding her there for months without any human contact. To preserve her sanity, Mao uses her telekinesis to carve crude wooden, life-sized dolls resembling Hina and Anzu, treating them as companions. This period of isolation leaves her emotionally vulnerable and deeply dependent on others once she is rescued.

After escaping the island, Mao is taken in by a Chinese martial arts group who mistake her psychic powers for incredible fighting skill. She eventually reveals her true nature to two of the group’s members, Atsushi and a man called Baldy, who accept her. Mao later uses her abilities to help the group, disguising her esper powers as martial arts techniques. She also develops an intense, obsessive friendship with Hitomi, frequently sending her long chains of text messages.

Personality-wise, Mao is described as kind-hearted and gentle, but lacking in personal ambition. She is mentally fragile and can become heavily dependent on those she trusts when under stress. Her motivations are largely driven by a need for connection and belonging; she wants to find friends and a place where she is accepted. Over the course of the story, she grows from a lonely, isolated experiment into someone who forms genuine bonds, though she retains a degree of emotional neediness. Her notable abilities include telekinesis for moving objects, building structures such as rafts, and using her dolls as weapons in combat.
