Description
Doug Horbat is a main character in the anime Last Hope and a member of the special unit known as Pandora, where he serves as the team sniper. Before joining the group, he worked as a bounty hunter, a profession that earned him the fearsome nickname Tiger's Eye. He is almost always accompanied by his beloved pet cat, a feline companion he named Emilia. In terms of appearance, Doug has fair skin and hair that is primarily a light fawn color but is streaked with vivid coral. His eyes are gray, and he typically wears a dark navy work suit paired with hunter green chest armor.
On the surface, Doug is known as a friendly, talkative, and outgoing person who genuinely enjoys the company of women and his cat, often acting as the mood-maker of the group. He frequently gives his teammates nicknames, referring to Leon as Mr. Scholar, Chloe as little sister, and Glen as Boy or Delinquent. However, this cheerful and laid-back exterior masks a much more complex interior. While he appears easygoing, his calm demeanor is suspected by his comrade Cain to hide serious personal demons, making him a stepford smiler. When he looks through the scope of his rifle, his friendly personality vanishes, replaced by the cold, focused, and beast-like eyes of a professional killer.
Doug’s motivations and personality are deeply rooted in a tragic past. At a young age, he was taken in by an organization of assassins that trained children to become killers. These children were given a surrogate mother to raise them until they were deemed ready, at which point they were forced to prove their loyalty by taking a life. In a cruel twist, the person they were ordered to kill was their own surrogate mother, a traumatic event designed to crush their spirit. Later, Doug was given an assignment to monitor a young female scientist named Emilia Vallis. However, instead of killing her, he fell in love with her. The two faked her death and ran away together, adopting a kitten they also named Emilia. This happiness was short-lived, as the worldwide disaster known as the Xianglong Crisis led to an attack where a B.R.A.I. killed his beloved Emilia.
In the story of Last Hope, Doug initially works with Team Pandora primarily for payment, but he gradually comes to genuinely care for his teammates. His role is that of a long-range combat expert, though his personal quest for closure regarding his lost love often drives his actions. This culminates in a complex arc where he appears to betray Pandora, siding with an artificial intelligence based on the personality of the real Emilia Vallis who saved his life. His grief and desire to be with her again lead him down a dark path, but he ultimately comes to his senses and destroys the AI, sacrificing himself in the process to take down a powerful enemy. While he appears to die, he is later revealed to have survived.
Key relationships define much of his character arc. His past with Emilia Vallis is the most significant, representing a love that ended in tragedy. In the present day, the cat he named after her serves as a constant, living memory of that time. He also develops a strong bond with the other members of Team Pandora, including the prodigy scientist Leon Lau, whose sister Chloe he affectionately refers to as little sister. His relationship with the team evolves from mere mercenary work to genuine friendship and loyalty.
As a fighter, Doug is an exceptionally skilled sniper. He is a central combatant for Team Pandora, piloting his own transforming mecha. He receives a significant power upgrade known as a Hyper Drive, which allows his M.O.E.V. (the series term for its transforming mecha) to transform and gain new abilities. His synchronization with a mech containing the consciousness of Emilia Vallis has unintended and severe consequences, demonstrating the dangerous nature of his emotional state and the technology. Despite the cold efficiency he displays as a killer, his abilities are always tempered by his underlying personality, such as when overusing his Hyper Drive gives him an uncontrollable urge to cuddle, especially with his cat.
