Description
Brain Unglaus is a warrior from the Re-Estize Kingdom who begins as an arrogant and power-hungry fighter before evolving into a humbled and principled swordsman. Originally a farmer, his natural, god-given talent for the sword propelled him to become an undefeated warrior, a reputation that ended only when he suffered his first loss to Gazef Stronoff in a tournament to determine the kingdom's strongest fighter. This defeat ignited an obsession within him; he refused offers of nobility and instead set out on a journey to grow stronger, eventually becoming a mercenary for a group called the Death Spreading Brigade.
His personality is defined by a single-minded pursuit of martial perfection. In his early days, he was arrogant and believed any action was justified if it helped him defeat his rival, Gazef. This worldview is shattered during an encounter with Shalltear Bloodfallen, a vampire guardian of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Shalltear effortlessly nullifies his most powerful techniques using only the nail of her pinky finger, an act that completely crushes his spirit and reduces him to a terrified, suicidal coward who flees from the battle. This trauma haunts him, leaving him unable to sleep without nightmares.
Brain begins his recovery after being taken in by Gazef in the capital. His true transformation, however, occurs when he witnesses the young warrior Climb endure a wave of deadly killing intent from the butler Sebas Tian without breaking down. Seeing someone much weaker than himself display such unyielding resolve forces Brain to redefine his understanding of strength, realizing it is not just physical power but also courage, selflessness, and a reason to fight for others. Grateful to his former rival, Brain develops a deep friendship with Gazef, viewing him almost as a father figure. He also forms a bond with Climb, whom he begins to care for and protect, and he holds Sebas in great admiration for his immense power.
Driven by his renewed spirit, Brain continues to refine his swordsmanship, developing a series of unique martial arts techniques. His abilities include Field, a perception skill that allows him to sense everything within a three-meter radius; God Flash, an impossibly fast drawing attack so quick that blood will not stick to the blade; and Fourfold Slash of Light, a technique he mastered on his own. When he encounters Shalltear again, he combines these skills to create Nail Clipper. While still vastly outmatched, he achieves the symbolic and personal victory of cutting the tip of her fingernail, proving to himself that his life's training was not meaningless.
In the final chapter of his life, during the Sorcerer Kingdom's invasion of Re-Estize, Brain chooses to stay and face death with dignity rather than flee. He engages the guardian Cocytus in a duel, having surpassed his old rival Gazef and reached the realm of heroes, a level of power considered the pinnacle for humans. Cocytus estimates his level to be around 40, an extraordinary feat for a mortal. In this final fight, he unleashes his ultimate technique, True Nail Clipper. Though he is slain by a single strike from Cocytus, his courage earns him the respect of his enemy. Cocytus orders his body to be frozen in ice so it will not be desecrated and takes a detour rather than stepping over it, a final tribute to a true warrior.
