Description
Gazef Stronoff is the Warrior Captain of the Re-Estize Kingdom, a position that marks him as the single strongest warrior in the nation and the commander of the king’s personal elite guard. He is a man in his early thirties, with a physique so muscular and imposing that it is often described as resembling a muscle monster. In a region where most people have lighter features, Gazef stands out with his short black hair and black eyes, traits inherited from his southern bloodline. His appearance, coupled with his straightforward and serious demeanor, conveys a sense of absolute reliability and quiet strength.

Originating from the lowest rungs of society, Gazef was born a commoner and lived in a village before rising through the ranks entirely on his own merit and martial prowess. His life changed forever when he won a royal tournament, defeating the formidable warrior Brain Unglaus in the finals. Rather than seeking personal glory, he accepted the victor's prize: a position as the direct retainer and sword of King Ramposa III. This ascension from poverty to the highest military office in the land shapes every aspect of his character. He has not forgotten his roots, and as a result, he feels a profound sense of kinship with the common people, viewing their protection as his primary duty. This empathy drives him to act with a heroism that is almost reckless; he is well-known for charging headfirst into obvious traps and dangerous situations if it means he has a chance to save innocent lives, a tendency that often exasperates his more cynical subordinates.

Gazef's personality is defined by a strict, unshakeable moral code and absolute loyalty to his king. He is acutely aware that his talents lie in combat and strategy, not in political maneuvering. Consequently, he deliberately positions himself as the pure, unsullied sword of the crown. He refuses to align himself with any of the kingdom’s feuding noble factions, a decision that has earned him the admiration of the populace but the enmity of the corrupt aristocracy, who see him as a dangerous variable or merely a brutish commoner out of his depth. Despite his power, he lives a remarkably frugal life, with a noted hobby of saving money, and avoids the luxuries his station could afford him. His loyalty to King Ramposa III transcends fear of death; he considers the King’s trust to be his most sacred possession and would rather die a thousand times than betray it.

Throughout the story, Gazef serves as a central pillar of the Re-Estize Kingdom and a key point of contact with the forces of Nazarick. His relationship with Ainz Ooal Gown is deeply significant, beginning when Ainz saved his life from a coup de grâce by the Slane Theocracy’s Sunlight Scripture. Gazef recognizes the immense magical power of the being known as Momon and later as the Sorcerer King, and while their nations become bitter enemies, Gazef maintains a personal respect and gratitude towards Ainz, viewing him as a noble and honorable individual. Ainz, in turn, esteems Gazef for his integrity and strength of will, a rarity in the New World. One of Gazef's most pivotal relationships is his rivalry and friendship with Brain Unglaus. After defeating Brain in the tournament, the two became competitive comrades, with Brain dedicating his life to surpassing Gazef's strength. Gazef also takes a mentoring interest in Climb, the loyal guard of Princess Renner, teaching him the fundamentals of swordsmanship and the importance of dedicating one's strength to the protection of others.

For much of the series, Gazef’s primary motivation is to protect the fragile peace of his kingdom from external threats like the Baharuth Empire and internal decay caused by greedy nobles. He acts as a deterrent, with neighboring nations viewing him as the only reason the Kingdom has not yet collapsed under its own weight. His role is inevitably tragic, however. When the Sorcerer Kingdom declares war and the Battle of the Katze Plains becomes a horrific slaughter, Gazef is forced to face his ultimate dilemma. Ainz, in a final act of respect, offers to spare his life and take him as a subordinate. To accept would mean abandoning his king and betraying everything he stands for; to refuse means certain death. Gazef chooses death on his own terms. He requests a one-on-one duel with Ainz, using the Kingdom’s treasured sword, Razor Edge, which holds the unique property of being able to wound the otherwise invincible Ainz. Knowing he cannot win, he fights anyway as a final act of defiance and loyalty. His death is instantaneous, caused by a high-tier instant-death spell cast by Ainz, which prevents low-level resurrection. Even in defeat, Gazef achieves his final goal: his honorable sacrifice and the request that accompanied it moved Ainz to call off the attack, sparing the surviving soldiers of the Kingdom.

In terms of ability, Gazef is regarded as the pinnacle of human potential in the Re-Estize Kingdom, though he is noted to exist just one step below the realm of true heroes without magical assistance. He is considered to be on par with an adamantite-ranked adventurer. His true power manifests when he dons the Five Treasures of the Kingdom: Razor Edge (a sword of peerless sharpness), the Guardian Armor (which deflects lethal blows), the Amulet of Immortality (providing continuous regeneration), the Gauntlets of Vitality (which remove fatigue), and a special ring given by Rigrit that elevates a warrior's level cap. With these items, his strength is amplified dramatically, allowing him to perform Martial Arts that push his body to its absolute limits. His signature techniques include the "Sixfold Slash of Light," an ultimate attack that unleashes six instantaneous slashes, and "Flow Acceleration," which temporarily speeds up neural functions to grant superhuman reaction times. He masterfully utilizes other abilities such as "Possibility Sense" to gauge an opponent's strength and "Focus Battle Aura" to enchant his weapon against intangible foes. Despite this formidable arsenal, the narrative makes it clear that while Gazef is the strongest human in the kingdom, he is still a mere mortal standing against an Overlord of another world.
