Description
Cocytus is the Floor Guardian of the fifth level of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, a domain of eternal ice known as the frozen glacier. He is an NPC created by the Supreme Being Warrior Takemikazuchi, designed to embody the perfect ideal of a warrior. Physically, Cocytus is an imposing, bipedal insectoid creature standing approximately two and a half meters tall. His light blue body is covered in a spiky, armor-like exoskeleton and constantly radiates a chilling cold. He possesses a tail and four arms, allowing him to wield multiple weapons simultaneously in combat.
Cocytus's personality is defined by a strict, earnest, and chivalrous code of conduct. He is a man of few words and straightforward thinking, embodying the archetype of a samurai. His loyalty to his master, Ainz Ooal Gown, is absolute, and he considers himself to be the sword of Nazarick, an instrument of his master's will. Unlike many other inhabitants of Nazarick who are xenophobic or cruel, Cocytus possesses a strong sense of honor and respect for bravery and martial spirit. He pays tribute to courageous opponents, even those far weaker than himself, and believes in giving them a warrior's death. While he does not hesitate to carry out orders that involve terrible acts, such as slaughter, he often shows remorse for his fallen enemies and admires their determination.
Cocytus's primary motivation is to serve Ainz faithfully and to prove his worth as a warrior and commander. He is driven by a desire to see his master's legacy continue, and he has a noticeable aspiration to one day serve as a mentor, or even an uncle-like figure, to any future heir of Ainz Ooal Gown. This leads him to occasionally daydream about such a future. Although he takes great pride in his duty of defending Nazarick, he has expressed a feeling of anxiousness and a touch of jealousy towards other guardians, like Demiurge, who are given missions that yield visible results, while his own role largely involves passive defense.
Cocytus holds several key relationships within Nazarick. He shares a particularly strong friendship with Demiurge, despite their opposing personalities, and the two are even depicted as drinking partners. Narberal Gamma is another guardian with whom he gets along unexpectedly well, a trait inherited from their creators, who were close friends. He has a respectful but straightforward relationship with fellow warrior Sebas Tian. With his creator, Warrior Takemikazuchi, he shares a knack for naming things; it was Cocytus who proposed the title of Sorcerer King for Ainz. He rules over the Lizardmen tribes, who were subjugated in a campaign he led, and he has developed a paternal-like care for them, even resurrecting their champion, Zaryusu Shasha, whom he deeply respects. He also holds a strong, silent respect for the human swordsman Brain Unglaus, whom he was forced to kill in single combat, preserving his body in ice as an honor.
The character undergoes notable development through his first major mission, the Lizardmen subjugation. Initially inexperienced in leading a large force, his first assault fails due to over-reliance on sheer power and a lack of strategy. This failure humbles him and leads to significant personal growth. Impressed by the Lizardmen's valor, he defies his initial orders of extermination and petitions Ainz to accept them as vassals, demonstrating a capacity for mercy and strategic thinking. This request is granted, and he is given the territory to rule. This experience showcases that despite being a static creation of the game's system, Cocytus can learn, adapt, and evolve beyond his original programming.
In terms of abilities, Cocytus is one of the most powerful close-combat fighters in Nazarick, boasting the highest pure attack power among the Floor Guardians when using a weapon. His total level is 100, consisting of 30 racial levels and 70 class levels, including advanced jobs like Sword Saint, Asura, and Knight of Niflheim. His primary method of fighting is wielding four of his twenty-one personal weapons at once. His arsenal includes the divine-class blade God-Slaying Emperor Blade, a gift from his creator, and his signature silver halberd, Decapitation Fang. Due to his insectoid nature, he cannot wear conventional armor, but his natural exoskeleton, or outer skin, can be strengthened with data crystals and is durable. As a master of ice-based attacks, he possesses a freezing passive aura, can create massive pillars of ice, and unleash piercing icicles. Beyond physical prowess, he possesses numerous special skills, including a devastating multi-attack combo and the ability to nullify attacks from low-tier magic weapons.
