TV-Series
Description
Azazel is a central figure in High School DxD Hero, known as the former Governor General of the Grigori, the organization of Fallen Angels. He is an ancient being who originally fell from grace in Heaven, and his stated reason for this fall was his pursuit of worldly desires, specifically his attraction to women. In terms of appearance, he is a tall, handsome man with a charismatic and roguish look, typically dressed in casual attire like a yukata. He is most notably distinguished by his twelve large, black, bat-like wings, which are said to be blacker than those of any other Fallen Angel, symbolizing his long fall and high status.
Azazel's personality is a blend of lighthearted perversion and profound wisdom. On the surface, he is playful, mischievous, and openly perverted, often acting as a troublesome nuisance. He enjoys conducting dangerous experiments on a whim and is notorious for his love of women, having created countless harems over the millennia. This aspect of his character leads him to be a mentor and hero to the protagonist, Issei Hyoudou, as he freely shares his extensive knowledge on matters of love and desire. However, beneath this frivolous exterior lies a deeply caring, responsible, and charismatic leader. He possesses a strong pacifistic tendency, preferring dialogue and strategy over unnecessary violence, and he genuinely values the lives of his subordinates and students. This combination of wisdom, compassion, and leadership makes him immensely popular and respected among his Fallen Angel followers.
His primary motivation throughout the series shifts from leading his faction to pursuing his passion for research and fostering the next generation. As a genius researcher and a fanatic of Sacred Gears, the artifacts born from the God of the Bible, Azazel is driven by an insatiable curiosity. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of these gears and spends much of his time creating artificial versions and support devices. After the Three Factions peace agreement, his motivation becomes deeply personal; feeling a strong sense of guilt for the suffering caused by his former subordinate, Raynare, to Issei and Asia Argento, he dedicates himself to their growth. He decides that guiding and protecting them is a more meaningful form of compensation than a simple apology, leading him to take on the role of their teacher and advisor.
In the story of High School DxD Hero, Azazel serves as the Occult Research Club's advisor and a chemistry teacher at Kuoh Academy. In this role, he acts as a strategic mastermind and technical advisor to the Gremory group. He is instrumental in training the young devils, particularly in unlocking the advanced abilities of their Sacred Gears. He provides crucial training regimens, develops battle strategies against powerful foes like the god Loki, and even composes the infamous Oppai Dragon song to help Issei regain control of his power. Beyond his mentorship, he remains a formidable political figure, navigating the complex relationships between the Three Factions and representing the Fallen Angels in critical negotiations.
Azazel’s relationships are central to his character development. He shares a deep, father-son bond with Vali Lucifer, the White Dragon Emperor, whom he took in and raised after rescuing him from an abusive family. Despite Vali later leaving his organization, Azazel continues to care for him deeply. He is also a close friend and comrade to other Fallen Angels like Baraqiel, whose wife’s death he blames himself for, leading him to feel a great sense of responsibility for their daughter, Akeno Himejima, and watch over her from afar. His relationship with Issei is that of a mentor and surrogate father figure, where he provides not only combat training but also life advice, earning Issei's profound respect. He maintains a respectful and friendly rivalry with the Devil leaders, Sirzechs Lucifer, and the Angel leader, Michael.
Throughout the series, Azazel undergoes significant development. He begins as the secretive and somewhat suspicious leader of a third faction. He evolves into a dedicated educator and ultimately a selfless hero. A key turning point occurs when he sacrifices his own arm to defeat an enemy and later takes full responsibility for the violations of the peace treaty, stepping down from his prestigious post as Governor General to become a full-time researcher and supervisor. This act shows his commitment to peace and accountability over power. His journey culminates when he volunteers to enter a dimensional isolation barrier to fight an unkillable super-beast for eternity, a sacrifice he makes to protect the world he has come to nurture.
As a combatant, Azazel is incredibly powerful, ranked at the Maou-class (Devil King class) or higher. His notable abilities include the standard Fallen Angel powers of generating light spears. However, his true strength lies in his custom-made artificial Sacred Gears. His primary weapon is the Down Fall Dragon Spear, an artificial Sacred Gear containing the power of the Dragon King Fafnir. This gear has a Balance Breaker called the Fallen Dragon Armor, which grants him a golden dragon-shaped suit of armor. He also wields the Armour of the King of the Monster of Destruction, a Counter Balance form that seals the power of the Greek monster Typhon, equipping him with a powerful trident and dark armor. To compensate for his lost arm, he uses a highly advanced prosthetic limb equipped with rockets, lasers, and missiles, showcasing his prowess as an inventor.
