TV-Series
Description
Koneko Toujou, originally named Shirone, is a prominent female protagonist in High School DxD. She is a first-year student at Kuoh Academy who advances to become a second-year student over the course of the series and a key member of the Occult Research Club.
Her background is marked by profound tragedy. Koneko is a Nekoshou, a rare and powerful variant of the cat-like Nekomata species. She was born to a Nekomata mother named Fujimai and a human father who was a scientist. Following her parents' death in an accident related to her father's experiments, Koneko and her older sister, Kuroka, were taken in by a Devil. When Kuroka lost control of her Nekomata powers and killed her master, she was branded a Stray Devil and forced to flee. Because of her relation to Kuroka, Koneko was sentenced to execution. She was saved by Sirzechs Lucifer, one of the Four Great Satans, who entrusted her to the care of his sister, Rias Gremory. Rias gave her the name Koneko, which means kitten in Japanese, and welcomed her into her peerage as a reincarnated Devil serving as her first Rook.
At the beginning of the series, Koneko displays a quiet, cold, and stoic personality, a direct result of the trauma from witnessing her sister's rampage and the subsequent isolation. She rarely expresses emotions and is blunt, often criticizing Issei Hyoudou for his perverted nature. Underneath this detached exterior, she deeply cares for her comrades and is highly protective of them in battle. She has an insecurity about her small stature, taking offense when called a midget. She is also a self-proclaimed glutton with a strong love for sweets and gourmet food. After Issei helps her overcome her fear of using Senjutsu, her personality undergoes a significant shift. She becomes more open, affectionate towards Issei, and starts exhibiting more feline traits, such as ending her sentences with Nya and openly expressing her feelings for him. She develops a deep romantic attachment to Issei and eventually sees him as her partner.
Koneko's primary motivation evolves throughout the story. Initially, she seeks safety and stability within Rias's peerage, suppressing her powers to avoid the fate that befell her sister. She is fiercely loyal to Rias for rescuing her and seeks to repay that debt by serving her faithfully. As she grows closer to the group, her motivations expand to protecting her newfound family. Later, her driving force becomes her love for Issei, wanting to support him, grow stronger by his side, and secure a place in his life.
In the story, Koneko serves as a core member of the Occult Research Club and Rias Gremory's peerage. As a Rook, her primary role in combat is a frontline fighter and physical powerhouse, utilizing her immense strength and martial arts skills. She often acts as the strong, silent support of the team, and her character arc provides significant emotional depth regarding the world of Yokai and the politics of the Devils.
Her key relationships define her growth. Her bond with Rias Gremory is foundational, built on gratitude and trust. Her older sister, Kuroka, represents her deepest trauma but eventually becomes her mentor in mastering Senjutsu, leading to a complex reconciliation. Koneko's relationship with Issei Hyoudou is her most prominent romantic arc, with Issei being the primary catalyst for her breaking out of her emotional shell and learning to embrace her identity.
Koneko experiences significant development, transforming from an emotionally scarred, withdrawn girl into a confident, expressive, and powerful young woman. She comes to terms with her heritage and masters the Senjutsu abilities she once feared. Her acceptance of her past, reconciliation with her sister, and the blossoming of her romance with Issei mark the key milestones of her journey. She eventually fully embraces her original name, Shirone Toujou.
As a reincarnated Devil and Rook, Koneko possesses immense physical strength, endurance, and defense, allowing her to easily overpower opponents and withstand powerful attacks. Being a Nekoshou grants her an innate talent for Senjutsu, the ability to manipulate the flow of ki. She can use this for powerful physical augmentation, creating a Touki aura that further boosts her strength, speed, and defense. She is a master hand-to-hand combatant. Koneko can also use Senjutsu for advanced healing and to sense others. Her mastery allows her to enter various transformation states, including Nekomata Mode, a Level 2 Nekomata Mode with two tails and greatly enhanced power, and Shirone Mode, which temporarily ages her to an adult form with significantly increased abilities. She can also summon Kasha, a burning wheel of purification fire, as a powerful attack.
