Description
Kunou is a young youkai belonging to the nine‑tailed golden fox clan, recognized as the princess of the Kyoto youkai. Her mother is Yasaka, the leader of the Kyoto youkai faction. When the Hero Faction of the Chaos Brigade kidnapped Yasaka, Kunou assumed temporary leadership over Kyoto’s supernatural community despite her elementary‑school‑aged appearance. She has golden blonde hair usually tied in a ponytail, golden yellow eyes with a fox‑like quality, and a full set of nine golden fox tails accompanied by matching fox ears. Her typical attire is a traditional red‑and‑white miko shrine maiden outfit worn with tall geta sandals, and later she is also seen in the Kuoh Academy middle‑school uniform. Physically she is small, with a height of 142 centimeters and a weight of 34 kilograms, which allows her to ride comfortably on the shoulders of others.
In personality Kunou carries herself with the composed dignity expected of a princess and a co‑ruler, yet she retains a clear childish side. She is stubborn and proud when defending her people, and deeply caring when it comes to her mother’s safety. Her sense of responsibility pushes her to act bravely in front of other factions and to maintain order in Kyoto during the crisis. At the same time she displays wide‑eyed fascination with new experiences, such as seeing Issei’s Scale Mail armor for the first time, and she can become flustered or jealous when her mother openly flirts with Issei. This blend of regal poise and genuine innocent curiosity defines her, and she gradually learns to trust those outside her own kind.
Kunou’s primary motivation is to rescue her mother and protect the Kyoto youkai from the Hero Faction that abducted Yasaka. Once the immediate crisis is resolved, she nurtures a longer‑term ambition to become a powerful and respected ruler like her mother, and to strengthen the place of the youkai in the wider supernatural world. She also desires to broaden her experience, which leads her to enroll at Kuoh Academy as a first‑year middle‑school student in order to receive an education under Rias Gremory’s guidance.
Within the story of High School DxD Hero, Kunou is introduced when Issei Hyoudou and the Occult Research Club visit Kyoto on a school trip. Mistaking them for members of the Hero Faction that took her mother, she attacks them alongside her subordinates before the misunderstanding is cleared. Afterward she becomes a crucial ally, cooperating with Rias’s group to track down the real culprits, defeat the Hero Faction, and free Yasaka. Her involvement marks a significant turning point in relations between the youkai of Kyoto and the Gremory household. Following these events, she transitions into a recurring supporting character, attending Kuoh Academy and occasionally joining larger supernatural conflicts together with her mother.
Key relationships center on her mother, Yasaka, towards whom Kunou shows fierce loyalty and affection. Her bond with Issei evolves from initial hostility to a fond attachment; she enjoys riding on his shoulders and looks up to him as a protector. Under Rias Gremory’s oversight at school, she receives guidance that helps her adapt to a more peaceful human environment. A later important connection is formed with the dragon god Ophis, whose company unlocks new potential within Kunou’s own powers. She also grows close to the broader student body at Kuoh Academy, where her striking appearance makes her quite popular.
Over the course of her appearances Kunou’s development is marked by a broadening of her world. She moves from being a sheltered princess forced into wartime leadership to a student navigating ordinary school life while still carrying her royal responsibilities. Her willingness to cooperate with devils, fallen angels and other factions replaces her initial distrust of outsiders. The time she spends with Ophis also triggers a significant power evolution, giving her a more formidable combat presence and a new form.
Regarding abilities, as a nine‑tailed fox Kunou naturally generates and controls golden spiritual fox fire, an ability that is still maturing but already potent. She can shapeshift to hide her tails and ears, allowing her to blend into human society when attending school or moving through everyday settings. Her most notable advanced technique is the Fox Dragon Mode, which she attains after spending considerable time with Ophis. In this state her hair turns white and her spiritual aura swells to a level described as similar to that of a beast god. While in Fox Dragon Mode she can further amplify her mother Yasaka’s power by directly transferring her own energy, a feat that demonstrates her growing potential as a support and combat asset among the youkai.
