Description
Heisuke Tōdō serves as the captain of the Eighth Unit of the Shinsengumi, holding the distinction of being the youngest captain within the organization. He is a founding member who has been with the group since its early formation. Physically, Heisuke is described as tall and lanky, a build that does not immediately suggest the skills of a traditional swordsman, and he bears a noticeable scar on his forehead.

On the surface, Heisuke presents a whimsical and light-hearted personality, preferring a relaxed and casual demeanor over the solemnity expected of someone of his rank. He is known for his quick speech and a tendency to speak whatever comes to his mind without prior filtering, a habit that has occasionally led him into trouble. A self-proclaimed lover of small and cute things, his playful nature often causes him to be grouped with two other officers as part of an informal trio known for their comedic and mischievous behavior. This cheerful facade, however, covers a much more complex inner world. Beneath his happy-go-lucky exterior lies a mixture of fear, anger, and remorse, revealing a serious and introspective side that he typically conceals.

Heisuke's motivations are deeply tied to the Shinsengumi's mission, and he is initially very enthusiastic about their cause. His loyalty to his comrades within the group is fierce and unwavering, and he is consistently willing to risk his life for them. This devotion is tested as the story progresses and the strict code of the Shinsengumi comes into question. At such moments, he drops his playful air and becomes genuinely irritated, indicating how seriously he takes the principles of the group. A pivotal moment in his development involves witnessing a fellow member, Yamanami, commit seppuku. This event instills a deep fear in Heisuke regarding whether he can abide by all the harsh rules enforced upon the members. This internal conflict ultimately leads him to a moment of crisis where, after feeling he has betrayed the Shinsengumi, he asks his close friends to end his life for him, believing it to be the honorable course of action.

In terms of key relationships, Heisuke is part of the Comedian Trio, a close-knit group of friends whose bond extends beyond formal military duty. His loyalty to these friends is paramount, and in critical moments, this friendship takes precedence over strict adherence to the Shinsengumi's code. Another significant relationship is with the young protagonist, Tetsunosuke Ichimura, towards whom Heisuke acts as a kind of older brother figure, albeit one who serves as a mischievous and unorthodox role model. His role in the story is that of a supportive senior officer and friend whose personal journey highlights the internal struggles and moral complexities faced by members of the Shinsengumi during a turbulent historical period. His development arc is marked by a gradual crumbling of his cheerful persona as the weight of the organization's rigid code and the tragic events around him take their toll.

Regarding abilities, Heisuke is a trained and skilled swordsman who utilizes the Hokushin Itto Ryu style of swordsmanship. As a captain, his combat skills are formidable, and he is described as being perfectly capable as a warrior. In contrast to his dangerous profession, he has no notable cooking ability. His story concludes with his death, an event portrayed with significant emotional weight and dramatic irony, marking a tragic end to his personal struggles and loyalties.
