TV-Series
Description
Genjirou Tanigaki is a former Private First Class of the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army and a Matagi, a traditional hunter from the Tohoku region of Japan. He is a large, muscular man with a significant amount of body hair, short black hair, dark brown eyes, thick eyebrows, and a thin beard along his jawline. He bears a small scar on his right cheek from an early fight with the protagonist. His typical attire initially consists of the standard Japanese military uniform, often supplemented with a fur-lined leather vest for cold weather. After leaving the military and spending time with the Ainu people, he begins to incorporate their traditional clothing into his appearance, such as a matanpushi headband and an attush robe.
Tanigaki's background is marked by tragedy. His younger sister, Fumi, married his best friend, Kenkichi Aoyama. After she contracted smallpox, Aoyama, in an act of mercy, killed her and burned down their house rather than let her suffer from a disfiguring and isolating disease. Tanigaki, unaware of this painful context, believed Aoyama had murdered his sister and left his hometown of Ani on a quest for revenge. He enlisted in the 7th Division, hoping to find his former friend on the battlefield. During the Russo-Japanese War, he finally located a mortally wounded Aoyama, only to learn the truth behind his sister's death. This revelation left Tanigaki hollow, having lost his purpose for revenge and his sense of identity.
Initially, Tanigaki presents as stern and aloof, a cold and lost person shaped by grief and a thirst for vengeance. However, after being severely injured by a wolf and subsequently abandoned by his military unit, his personality begins to change. He is rescued and nursed back to health by Tetsuzou Nihei, a legendary bear hunter and tattooed convict, and later by Huci, the grandmother of the Ainu girl Asirpa. Through these experiences, Tanigaki reveals a deeply caring and honorable nature. He is driven by a strong sense of duty and a desire to repay his debts to those who have helped him. He is also noted to be shy about his body and his traditional dancing abilities. He values loyalty highly, although his loyalty ultimately shifts from the manipulative Lieutenant Tsurumi to the people who show him genuine kindness and a new way of life.
Tanigaki's primary motivation evolves from a search for personal revenge to a quest for purpose and belonging. After discovering the truth about his sister and losing his direction as a soldier, he finds a new purpose in protecting those he cares for. This is exemplified by his promise to Huci to bring Asirpa back home safely, and later by his fierce devotion to the Ainu woman Inkarmat and their family. He is also motivated by a strong sense of righteousness and an honorable desire to repay the kindness he received, which leads him to break ties with the 7th Division permanently.
In the story, Tanigaki begins as an antagonist, a member of the 7th Division sent to pursue Asirpa and Sugimoto. After his rescue by Nihei and Huci, he becomes a protector of Asirpa's village and eventually joins Sugimoto's group, traveling with them to Karafuto. His role shifts to that of a key ally, providing invaluable hunting and survival expertise. A significant part of his journey involves his relationship with Inkarmat, an Ainu fortune teller with whom he initially travels under Tsurumi's orders. Their bond deepens into a romantic relationship, and he ultimately betrays the 7th Division to rescue her when she is taken hostage. His story concludes with him finding peace, retiring to a kotan with Inkarmat to raise a large family, choosing a life far from the final conflict over the Ainu gold.
One of Tanigaki's most significant relationships is with Tetsuzou Nihei, whose passion for life and hunting leaves a profound impact on him; he inherits Nihei's Murata rifle after the older man's death. He also shares a deep bond with Huci, who cares for him like a grandson and for whom he feels a great debt of gratitude. He becomes something of a father figure to the young Ainu boy Chikapasi, and he makes the difficult decision to leave the boy in a safe home, gifting him Nihei's rifle as a symbol of maturity. His relationship with his former commander, Lieutenant Tokushirou Tsurumi, is one of manipulation and ultimately betrayal, as Tsurumi's willingness to threaten his pregnant wife forces Tanigaki to desert for good.
Throughout the series, Tanigaki undergoes significant development, transforming from a lost, revenge-driven soldier into a man with a clear purpose and a loving family. He reconciles with his past, sheds his cold exterior, and assimilates into the Ainu culture, finding a sense of belonging he never had in the military. He moves from being a tool of Tsurumi's ambition to an independent individual who chooses his own path, prioritizing the safety of his loved ones over any larger conflict.
As a Matagi, Tanigaki possesses a superior set of hunting, tracking, and survival skills that allow him to endure harsh conditions and live off the land. He is a highly proficient sharpshooter, skilled with a rifle at long distances, though perhaps not on the same supernatural level as some other snipers in the series. His physical strength is formidable, matching the series' other powerful characters. He is also an excellent cook, known for making a traditional dish called kane mochi from his hometown, which he uses to bond with others and sustain himself and his allies.
