Description
Kengo Usui is a male first-year student at Tenbi Academy, where he is a member of the Student Council Security Division. Standing approximately 168 centimeters tall, he is a close friend and classmate of the protagonist, Takeru Ooyama. Kengo is a supporting character who serves as a comedic foil and partner-in-crime to Takeru, and the two are known around campus for their shared perverted interests.
Kengo's personality is defined by his extreme and often comical lecherousness. He is frequently shown concocting schemes to peep on girls or demanding co-ed swimming classes, which often escalate into major school-wide commotions. This behavior is driven by a powerful, envy-fueled motivation: he is intensely jealous of Takeru, who shares a room with three attractive girls—Haruko Amaya, Kodama Himegami, and Inaho Kushiya. To sabotage what he sees as Takeru's ideal harem lifestyle, Kengo often teams up with another student, Uruchi Minaya. Despite his outward vulgarity, Kengo possesses a more sensitive and honorable side. He has a notable weakness for women's tears and cannot tolerate any man who makes a woman cry, demonstrating an ability to understand social cues and a strong, if inconsistently applied, sense of justice. He also harbors a specific romantic affection for his classmate, Kodama Himegami, and is supposedly a member of her fan club.
Kengo's role in the story is primarily to provide comedic relief through his outrageous antics, which inevitably lead to him being harshly punished by the female members of the Maken-ki. However, his background is far more complex than his behavior suggests. As revealed in volume 12 of the original manga, Kengo is one of several clones created by a figure named Yamato Takeru to serve as a potential vessel. Escaping from the institution where he was created as a child, Kengo began a new life, unaware of his origins as "Sample 0-01". This revelation connects him to another clone, Gouken Yamato, with whom he shares a unique and significant ability.
Kengo's notable abilities stem from his nature as a Maken user. He possesses an internal-type Maken called Point Man, which grants him the power to freely swap the positions of any objects he touches, including himself. This ability has various tactical applications, from evasion to setting up allies. More profoundly, as a clone of Yamato Takeru, Kengo possesses the innate ability of Element Canceller, which allows him to completely nullify elemental-based attacks or powers he comes into contact with. Throughout the series, Kengo shows very little development, remaining a consistent source of lecherous humor and a loyal, if troublesome, friend to Takeru. In a humorous epilogue depicted in the anime version, he is shown living to the ripe old age of 108, a number symbolically equal to the number of earthly desires.
