Description
Kaoruko Sazaki, known to most by her nickname Gyanko, is a prominent supporting character from a specific Gundam anime series. She is a third-year middle school student at St. Odessa Academy and serves as the leader of the Gunpla Battle team known as the Song Dynasty Vase. Her most defining characteristic is her deep and abiding love for the YMS-15 Gyan, a mobile suit known for its distinctive knight-like design and focus on melee combat. This passion is an inheritance from her older brother, Susumu Sazaki, and has led her to use only Gyan-type mobile suits since her elementary school years. Her devotion is so complete that she even wears hair ornaments shaped like the Gyan's iconic shield, and it is this obsession that earned her the nickname Gyanko from her rival and friend, Fumina Hoshino.

In terms of personality, Kaoruko initially presents herself as a confident and somewhat arrogant rival. She carries herself with the air of a princess from a prestigious school, looking down on opponents as she did during a practice match with the main team, the Try Fighters. However, this exterior is softened by a surprisingly emotional and devoted interior. Her confidence is matched by a sharp analytical mind, as she quickly discerns the formation of her opponents and devises effective counter-strategies. She also has a strong, almost comical, brother complex, frequently comparing others unfavorably to Susumu.

Her motivations are driven by a desire to honor her brother's legacy in Gunpla Battle and to prove the strength of her beloved Gyan-series machines. This takes a sharp turn after her first battle against Sekai Kamiki, the main protagonist. When Sekai saves her damaged Gunpla from being destroyed and praises her cherished shield, she becomes instantly and deeply enamored with him. This event softens her competitive edge, transforming her from a pure rival into a devoted, if often frustrated, supporter. Her new motivation intertwines her passion for Gunpla with a romantic interest in Sekai, leading her to frequently visit Seiho Academy to bring him lunch and cheer for his team.

Her role in the story is that of a recurring rival who transitions into a steadfast ally. After her defeat by the Try Fighters, she and her team become important supporting characters, providing encouragement and comic relief. She sees Fumina as a rival for Sekai's affections, leading to several instances of jealousy, particularly when Sekai interacts with other girls. Despite this, she is a reliable friend and a skilled competitor. Her team faces a crushing defeat in the semifinals of the national tournament against the powerhouse team G-Master. This loss leaves her heartbroken, but she quickly channels her disappointment into motivation, vowing to become stronger and build a new Gunpla.

Key relationships define much of her character arc. Her devotion to her brother, Susumu, is the foundation of her battling style. Her unrequited crush on Sekai Kamiki drives most of her personal interactions and comedic moments, though Sekai remains completely oblivious to her feelings. This creates a friendly rivalry with Fumina Hoshino, who has her own feelings for Sekai. She also forms a close bond with her two teammates, Mahiru Shigure and Keiko Sano, with whom she shares a sisterly dynamic, often comforting them and being comforted in turn.

Kaoruko experiences significant development from her introduction. She begins as an overconfident antagonist but gains humility and a more cheerful disposition after being defeated and shown kindness. The semifinal loss is a pivotal moment, showcasing her vulnerability and teaching her to cope with failure and channel it into creative energy. By the end of the main series and into the OVA, she has matured into a more resilient and driven fighter, having grown past her initial arrogance.

Her notable abilities lie both in her tactical thinking and her piloting skills. In battle, she is a calm and quick-thinking strategist, capable of exploiting environmental factors and enemy weaknesses. Her piloting style is aggressive and heavily focused on defense, reflecting her love for the Gyan's powerful shield. Her primary Gunpla in the main series is the AMX-104GG R-Gyagya, a mobile suit that carries on the design philosophy of the Gyan. In the Island Wars OVA, she pilots the YMS-15KRT02 Gyancelot, a custom Gunpla that resembles a knight. This machine is equipped with a durable family-heirloom shield that can fire needle missiles, a powerful lance that can unleash an electrical attack called Divine Wrath, and beam mantles that serve both defensive and offensive purposes. Her skill with these machines makes her a formidable opponent, capable of destroying opponents using only her shield and holding her own in a three-on-one situation.
