Description
Hayato Shinkai is a character from the cycling anime and manga series Yowamushi Pedal, who receives significant focus in the spin-off series Yowamushi Pedal: Spare Bike. He is primarily known as the ace sprinter for Hakone Academy, a powerhouse cycling school, and he wears the number 4 bib, which designates his specialized role on the team. Born on July 15, Shinkai has a distinctive appearance with long, straight red hair and relaxed, down-turned eyes, which often give him a calm and unbothered expression.

Shinkai’s background is deeply tied to his long-standing relationship with his teammate and captain, Fukutomi Juichi. The two have been classmates and rivals since middle school, where they served as vice-captain and captain of their bicycle club, respectively. This history has forged a strong bond of mutual respect and understanding between them. In his early years, Shinkai’s natural talent and explosive physical abilities earned him the reputation of being the fastest on flat terrain, a title he carried into Hakone Academy.

However, a traumatic event during his second year of high school drastically altered his path. In a race, driven by an intense lust for victory, Shinkai tried to pass a rider on the left and accidentally ran over a mother rabbit. Although he got up and won the race, he later returned to the scene to find the rabbit dead and its baby orphaned. Wracked with guilt, he took in the baby rabbit, naming it Usakichi, and developed a powerful psychological block that prevented him from passing any opponent on their left side. This trauma led him to reject his position in that year’s Inter-High, a decision that initially angered Fukutomi. After Shinkai explained his reason, Fukutomi understood and extracted a promise from him to return the following year, saving the number 4 bib for him.

Personality-wise, Shinkai usually presents a placid, laid-back, and easygoing demeanor. He is often seen carrying and eating portable food supplements, a habit he maintains even during races. He speaks with a casual dialect and has a teasing side, especially in his interactions with teammates like Toudou Jinpachi. Despite his normally gentle nature, he undergoes a dramatic transformation on the road when he shifts into a competitive mode. During high-stakes sprints, he unleashes his alter ego known as the "demon of Hakone's straight roads" or the "straight-line demon". In this state, his demeanor becomes wild and frenzied, his usual calm replaced by a manic, almost feral determination to win, accompanied by aggressive shouts.

Shinkai’s key relationships are central to his development, particularly with his third-year teammates at Hakone Academy. Fukutomi acts as the unyielding captain who demands excellence and believes in Shinkai’s strength. When Arakita Yasutomo and Toudou Jinpachi learned of his trauma, they took it upon themselves to help him practice, training him to become the best at passing on the right side. This support becomes the foundation for his return to racing. His role in the story culminates during the Inter-High, where his weakness is exploited by the cunning Midousuji Akira of Kyoto Fushimi. Midousuji, aware of the rumor about Shinkai’s trauma, deliberately leaves space on his left to psychologically trap him. Forced to confront his fear, Shinkai remembers the support of his teammates and breaks through his trauma, unleashing his demon form in a fierce battle for the sprint checkpoint.

Notable abilities define Shinkai as a pure sprinter. He relies on his innate physique, exceptional intuition, and explosive instantaneous power to achieve blistering speeds on flat sections of a race. Beyond his "demon" transformation, he employs a signature gesture he calls the "Bakyun pose," where he forms a pistol with his fingers, points at his target, and declares he will definitively take them down.

Throughout his journey, Shinkai evolves from a guilt-ridden athlete who had given up on his passion to someone who overcomes a deep psychological barrier to reclaim his role as his team’s fastest weapon. After the Inter-High and his graduation, he goes on to attend Meihayou University alongside Fukutomi. His development underscores a theme of overcoming personal trauma through the support of trusted friends and teammates, transforming his past guilt into a source of strength on the road.
