Description
Kojou Akatsuki is the central protagonist of Strike the Blood II, a high school student living on the artificial Demon Sanctuary of Itogami Island. Originally an ordinary human, his life changed when he met Avrora Florestina, the former Fourth Primogenitor. After becoming her blood servant and later following her orders to destroy her, he inherited her spirit and power, becoming the new Fourth Primogenitor, the world's most powerful vampire. He is the older brother of Nagisa Akatsuki and the childhood friend of Yuuma Tokoyogi, and his transformation binds him to the twelve destructive Beast Vassals that once served Avrora.
Kojou possesses a kind and empathetic nature, often going out of his way to help others despite his own struggles. He is generally relaxed and carefree, with a sly intelligence that surfaces when needed, but he has a quick temper when provoked or when his friends are threatened. Beneath his laid‑back exterior, he wrestles with the predatory instincts of his vampire side, which sometimes manifest as nosebleeds or a red glow in his eyes. His central motivation is to protect his loved ones and preserve his humanity while learning to control the immense power he never asked for. He desires a normal school life but is repeatedly drawn into supernatural conflicts that force him to accept his role as a Progenitor.
As the Fourth Primogenitor, Kojou is the focal point of the story in Strike the Blood II. The Lion King Agency dispatches the apprentice Sword Shaman Yukina Himeragi to observe him and, if necessary, eliminate him. Over time, he proves himself a defender of Itogami Island rather than a threat, using his abilities to counter a variety of enemies. His existence is a political and supernatural flashpoint, and his decisions shape the fate of the demon sanctuary.
His relationship with Yukina Himeragi is the most significant. Initially a watchdog, she becomes his primary blood partner and confidante, sharing a deep symbiotic bond that deepens into mutual trust and romantic affection. With his childhood friend Asagi Aiba, a gifted hacker, he maintains a long‑standing friendship that becomes complicated by her hidden feelings for him. He is fiercely protective of his younger sister Nagisa, who harbors latent spiritual powers and a mysterious connection to Avrora. Other key relationships include Sayaka Kirasaka, a fellow Sword Shaman who grows from hostility to respect and romantic interest, and his teacher Natsuki Minamiya, the Witch of the Void, who serves as a mentor and occasional ally. The spirit of Avrora Florestina resides within Kojou, sometimes guiding him and revealing the truth of his past.
Throughout Strike the Blood II and the series as a whole, Kojou evolves from a reluctant and pacifistic vampire into a confident leader who willingly embraces his responsibilities to protect his home and the people he cares about. He gradually awakens and learns to command the twelve Beast Vassals, each a unique familiar with formidable powers. Notable among them are the golden lion‑like Regulus Aurum and the flame‑based familiars that serve him in battle. His abilities include superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and durability far beyond that of ordinary vampires, as well as regeneration and the power to siphon blood to restore or enhance his strength. The bond with Yukina allows her to use the anti‑primogenitor spear Sekkarou to restrain or nullify his powers when necessary, but also enables her blood to sustain him. As he masters his inheritance, he gains greater control over his destructive potential and uncovers the lost memories of how he became the Fourth Primogenitor.
