Description
Juichi Fukutomi is a prominent figure in the competitive cycling world of his series, first introduced as a third-year student and the formidable captain of the Hakone Academy Bicycle Racing Club. He later continues his cycling career as a second-year student at Meiso University. As captain of Hakone, a team renowned as the "kings" of high school cycling, Fukutomi carries the weight of a powerful legacy, as his father founded the club and led it to its first victory, with his brother also having been a racer there.

Physically, Fukutomi is recognizable by his short, spiky blond hair, sharp dark eyes, and notably thick dark eyebrows. He almost always wears a serious, stoic expression, which has earned him nicknames like "Stone Face" or "Iron Mask" from his teammates. This unchanging demeanor often intimidates underclassmen, but it belies a more complex personality beneath the surface.

Fukutomi's personality is defined by an intense seriousness and a straightforwardness that can be mistaken for harshness. He holds himself to incredibly high standards and is deeply invested in living up to Hakone's title of kings. His personal motto is simply, "I am strong," a declaration of his unwavering belief in his own abilities. This pursuit of individual strength once led him to a critical failure. During his second year, the thought of losing to rival Shingo Kinjou drove him to desperation, causing him to recklessly grab Kinjou's jersey during a race. The ensuing crash left both cyclists injured, an act for which Fukutomi was deeply and publicly ashamed. He apologized repeatedly, accepted a punch from a Sohoku member without retaliation, and even shed tears over his loss of composure. This event became a turning point, shifting his philosophy from valuing only individual strength to understanding the power of a team united by faith and respect. He felt so dishonored that he was prepared to purposefully lose to Kinjou in a future race as penance, but ultimately decided that building the strongest possible team to fight in earnest was the truest way to atone.

Despite his intimidating exterior, Fukutomi possesses a big heart and incredible faith in his teammates. He openly expresses sincere gratitude to them, plans secret birthday celebrations, and gives curt but meaningful advice designed to push them to grow stronger. His few moments of embarrassment, such as being caught planning a surprise or trying to imitate a teammate's popular pose for fans, reveal an awkward but earnest side. His seriousness also has amusing limits, as he is secretly terrible at riding roller coasters, freezing with fear.

Within his own team, Fukutomi has deep and formative relationships. He has been friends with Hayato Shinkai since middle school, where they served as captain and vice-captain. Fukutomi was deeply upset when Shinkai was unable to race due to personal struggles but expressed unwavering faith in his eventual return. The two share an intuitive bond where Shinkai can often interpret Fukutomi's stoic expressions for others. His most significant relationship is arguably with Yasutomo Arakita. After a disastrous first meeting where Arakita insulted and attacked him, Fukutomi challenged him to a race, winning on a bicycle against Arakita's moped. He thus introduced Arakita to road racing, earning his lasting respect; Arakita states that Fukutomi is the only person he truly acknowledges, and the two develop a strong rider-assist dynamic in races.

His rivalry with Shingo Kinjou is the emotional core of his high school career. After the crash incident, Fukutomi visits Sohoku to formally apologize and asks for a favor: that Kinjou race him all-out if they are neck-and-neck in the next Inter-High. He admits that his battle with Kinjou revealed his own weakness and that only a fair fight can make him stronger. Kinjou accepts, and their intense rematch allows Fukutomi to finally overcome his guilt, shed tears of gratitude, and find closure. Fukutomi acknowledges Kinjou as truly strong, a person who carries the wills of his fallen teammates and never gives up.

In the story, Fukutomi's role is that of a powerful antagonist and rival who represents the established champion. His journey from an arrogant believer in solitary strength to a respected leader who values his team and honors his rivals is a central part of his development. He is a formidably powerful all-round cyclist and a superb strategist, capable of going toe-to-toe with the best and directing his team like an army. He was the primary force behind forming the core Hakone Academy team for the 41st Summer Inter High, demonstrating leadership skills that unite a group of highly individualistic aces. Fukutomi continues to be a presence in the cycling world after high school, attending Meiso University, where his pursuit of strength and mastery of competitive cycling remains unwavering.
