Description
Hayato Shinkai is a character who appears as a key member of the Hakone Academy cycling club before continuing his competitive career at Meiso University. During his middle school years at Hadano Daiichi, Shinkai was already known as a highly successful and formidable sprinter. A significant and traumatic event occurred during a race in his second year of middle school. While attempting to overtake a rider on the left side, driven by an intense desire for victory, he collided with a mother rabbit, causing its death. The guilt from this incident, where he felt he had taken a life for the sake of winning, profoundly traumatized him. He adopted the orphaned rabbit, naming it Usakichi, but developed a psychological block that made him unable to pass any competitor on the left side, as he would instinctively brake for fear of something jumping into the road.
This trauma led him to reject his place in the Inter-High competition during his second year of high school, much to the dismay of his teammates, particularly captain Juichi Fukutomi. After Fukutomi learned the reason for Shinkai's withdrawal, he made him promise to race the following year as part of the strongest team, reserving the number four bib for him. With the dedicated support of his teammates, including Fukutomi, Yasutomo Arakita, and Jinpachi Toudou, who practiced with him to help him master passing on the right, Shinkai was able to continue cycling and eventually compete in his third year.
In terms of personality, Shinkai generally exhibits a laid-back, placid, and caring nature. He is known to be very affectionate with his teammates, often referring to them by their given names, which is a sign of intimacy in Japanese culture. He has a notable fondness for food, frequently seen eating power bars and capable of consuming large quantities, such as extremely hot curry. He also enjoys reading mystery novels and has a signature gesture where he forms his hand like a pistol, points it at someone, and says "Bang!" as a proclamation of victory or a sign of approval. This relaxed demeanor changes drastically when he is in a competitive cycling environment, where he becomes a serious and formidable force.
Shinkai's primary motivation throughout his third-year Inter-High is to overcome his lingering trauma and fulfill the expectations of the team that supported him through his difficulties. His role in the story is defined as the ace sprinter for Hakone Academy, a position that demands he secure crucial points during flat stages of the race. This culminates in a high-stakes sprint checkpoint battle against Akira Midousuji of Kyoto Tachibana. Midousuji, having learned of Shinkai's psychological weakness, intentionally leaves space for him to pass on the left, hoping to exploit his fear. Cornered and pushed to his limit, Shinkai recalls the support of his teammates and finally breaks through his trauma, unleashing his former racing persona known as the "Straight-Line Demon". In this state, his calm composure is replaced by a wild and frenzied determination to win at all costs, showcasing his powerful athleticism and fight for his team.
Key relationships heavily influence his development. His bond with Juichi Fukutomi, a friend since middle school, is one of deep trust and mutual understanding; Shinkai can often read Fukutomi's stoic expressions and elaborate on his thoughts to others without needing explicit explanation. He has a supportive relationship with fellow sprinter Touichirou Izumida, who looks up to him as a role model. Despite being rivals, Shinkai shares a friendly and respectful rapport with Jin Tadokoro from Sohoku High School, even sharing a power bar with him during a grueling stage of the race and later exchanging phone numbers with him. Shinkai's development is the story of confronting his past guilt and transforming it into a source of strength, allowing him to race with full resolve again. His notable abilities lie in his natural sprinting talent, possessing exceptional athleticism, explosive power, and keen competitive instincts that have made him a top-tier racer since his youth.
