Description
Kimitaka Koga is a former student and a key member of the Sohoku High School bicycle racing club. He is a tall young man with a lean and athletic build, most notably characterized by his broad shoulders. He has short, dark brown hair and typically wears glasses. As a third-year student, he takes on the important behind-the-scenes role of equipment manager, responsible for maintaining the club's bicycles, while still being a capable and competitive rider. His reputation among his peers is that of a stamina fanatic, earning him nicknames like "Stamina Simpleton" or "Fitness Freak" due to his intense dedication to physical conditioning.
In his second year, Koga does not stand out much, but he becomes a prominent figure as a third-year. Normally, he is kind and considerate to his teammates. For instance, he looks after Sakamichi Onoda, giving him drinks to combat his motion sickness and offering practical advice on how to keep his glasses clean during races. However, this gentle demeanor masks a fierce and serious competitive drive. On the road, he is known for his obsessive commitment to pushing his limits, sometimes to a fault. He has a history of disregarding medical advice and team orders, choosing to race on injured legs and risking re-injury in his pursuit of victory. This reckless ambition is rooted in a deep admiration for his upperclassman, Shingo Kinjou, and a powerful desire to live up to the expectations placed upon him.
Koga's primary motivation is a desperate wish for redemption. As a talented first-year, he participated in the Inter-High but crashed badly. He had only ridden 980 kilometers of the required 1000 during the preliminary training camp, yet he was still allowed to race. The accident, which resulted in a serious injury that cost him a year and a half of recovery, forced both him and the injured Kinjou to retire from the race, costing Sohoku any chance of victory. This failure haunted him, and returning to race in the Inter-High as a third-year became his sole focus. This ambition puts him in direct conflict with his classmate Junta Teshima. Koga, who is seen as an elite talent comparable to Shunsuke Imaizumi and Shoukichi Naruko, openly dismisses Teshima as an "ordinary" cyclist. He threatens to replace Teshima on the Inter-High team, leading to a bitter and intense race between them during the training camp.
Koga's role in the story is that of a catalyst for conflict and growth within the Sohoku team. His rival battle with Teshima serves as a major point of character development for both. Despite his superior stamina and skill, Koga is ultimately defeated by Teshima, who represents the power of persistent, ordinary effort over innate talent. This loss is devastating for Koga, as it costs him his final chance to redeem himself on the national stage. However, the defeat also leads to his reconciliation with Teshima and Hajime Aoyagi, mending a friendship that had fractured since the accident in their first year. Following this emotional resolution, Koga fully embraces his supportive role. He continues to use his talents for the team, providing vital reconnaissance by riding the entire Inter-High course himself to gather data and holding strategy meetings in his apartment. He also demonstrates his keen observational skills by recognizing Issa Kaburagi's potential as a sprinter, though he chooses not to tell Issa directly. During the race, he acts as a support member, legally giving a push-start to a struggling Issa to keep him in the competition.
Koga's development is a journey from a reckless, ego-driven rider to a mature and responsible teammate who finds value in contributing behind the scenes. His notable abilities stem from his physical build and intense training. His broad shoulders are so powerful that other riders claim they hear the sound of a train when he passes by. He possesses fantastic stamina and is a strong all-rounder, though his technique can be unrefined due to his long break from competitive cycling. He uses his physique effectively for tactical maneuvers, such as bumping and blocking other riders. He is also a valuable source of technical knowledge, teaching teammates like Onoda how to draft more efficiently by riding close to the rear wheel of the cyclist in front to save energy during crosswinds.
