Description
Juichi Fukutomi is a prominent character who serves as the captain and ace of the Hakone Academy Bicycle Racing Club during his third year of high school. He comes from a deeply rooted cycling family; his father founded the Hakone Academy bicycle club and led it to its first victory, and his older brother Kichi also attended the academy as a racer. This family legacy placed significant expectations on him from a young age. Initially resistant to focusing solely on road racing, Fukutomi was a member of the track and field club at Hadano Daiichi Middle School. He entered an agreement with his brother to switch to cycling if he failed to reach nationals in track and field, which he did, subsequently joining the middle school bicycle racing club where he befriended Hayato Shinkai and quickly rose to become captain.
Fukutomi possesses an intensely serious, straightforward, and stoic personality, which often intimidates his underclassmen and earned him the initial nickname "Stone Face" from his teammate Yasutomo Arakita. His defining personal mantra is the declaration "I am strong," a belief in individual strength and self-reliance that has guided his career. He holds himself and his team to extremely high standards, feeling a heavy burden to live up to Hakone Academy's reputation as the "kings" of high school cycling. Despite his harsh exterior, he has deep faith in his teammates, is willing to give curt but meaningful advice, and secretly plans celebrations for their birthdays, indicating a thoughtful and caring nature he rarely shows openly. He also has unexpected traits, such as a secret talent for plate spinning and a fear of roller coasters.
Fukutomi's primary motivation throughout his high school career is to become truly strong and to atone for a critical mistake he made during the 40th Summer Inter High. As a second-year, while leading the race, he became unnerved by the relentless determination of Sohoku High's captain, Shingo Kinjou. Overwhelmed by the fear of losing, Fukutomi impulsively reached out and grabbed Kinjou's jersey, causing both cyclists to crash. Although Fukutomi finished the race, he was deeply ashamed of his actions. He immediately apologized, allowed Sohoku's Jin Tadokoro to punch him without retaliation, and withdrew from the final day's race as penance. A month later, he formally apologized again at Sohoku High and vowed not to let his mistake define him. His motivation shifted from winning at all costs to building the strongest possible team for the next Inter High so he could face Kinjou in a fair, honorable race to prove his growth and earn redemption.
Within the story, Fukutomi serves as the powerful leader and central strategist of Hakone Academy, the primary rival school to Sohoku. His role is to challenge the protagonists and embody a contrasting philosophy of individual power versus Sohoku's emphasis on teamwork. His relationships are central to his development. His rivalry with Shingo Kinjou is the most significant, transforming from a source of shame into a mutual respect that pushes both to become stronger. He has a long-standing friendship with Hayato Shinkai, which began in middle school, and he deeply values their promise to win the Inter High together. His relationship with Yasutomo Arakita began disastrously but led to Fukutomi recruiting the delinquent to cycling, and Arakita becomes a fiercely loyal teammate who affectionately calls him "Fuku-chan".
Fukutomi undergoes significant development, evolving from a rigid believer in individual strength to a leader who understands the value of collective effort. The crash with Kinjou serves as a critical turning point, forcing him to confront his own weakness and re-evaluate his philosophy. His redemption arc culminates in a climactic rematch with Kinjou on the second day of the 41st Summer Inter High, where he wins a fair contest and is moved to tears, finally releasing the guilt he had carried for a year. He later expresses heartfelt gratitude to his graduating teammates, affirming that they are strong together.
As a cyclist, Fukutomi is a formidable all-rounder with superb leadership and strategic skills, capable of directing his team like a well-organized army. He is powerful enough to go toe-to-toe with top competitors like Kinjou and is responsible for assembling Hakone Academy's core team for the 41st Inter High. Notable achievements include winning the Shonan Race in middle school and placing second in the Manazuru Circuit Road Race. His personal life includes a preference for apples, a dislike of mashed daikon for its bitterness, and the ownership of a pet turtle he named "Turtle".
