Description
Akira Midōsuji is a student at Kyoto Fushimi High School and a member of its bicycle racing club. He seizes the position of ace in his first year by defeating the previous ace and later formally assumes the captaincy. His entire identity is forged from a difficult childhood. As a boy, he lived with relatives while his mother was hospitalized, and he would bicycle twenty kilometers every day to visit her. His mother told him he had beautiful teeth, which she said were important for a professional athlete, planting an early ambition. He was not naturally gifted at sports and was bullied by classmates for being physically weak. After he won a race and went to share his success with his mother, her health declined rapidly, and she died soon after, urging him to keep moving forward. This loss crystallized his vow to become a professional cyclist and to never stop winning.

Midōsuji has a severe, eccentric, and sadistic personality. He frequently describes people and situations he dislikes as gross, a trademark expression of his contempt. He is a master of psychological warfare, using intimidation, deception, and cruel mind games to destabilize opponents. He researches rivals’ weaknesses and past traumas to exploit them during races, as seen when he falsely told Shunsuke Imaizumi about his own mother’s death to throw him off his game. Within his own team, he rules like a dictator, treating teammates as disposable support units for his own success. He believes winning is the only thing that matters and that any action taken to achieve victory is justified.

Physically, Midōsuji is tall with a slender, flexible build, wide shoulders, a long neck, and exceptionally long limbs. He has large dark eyes with 20/10 vision, an extremely long tongue that he often protrudes during races, and distinctive square teeth that he meticulously cares for. His hairstyles change dramatically over time, ranging from a buzzcut and a yellow mohawk to spiked hair and a bowl cut.

Midōsuji is an all-rounder who excels in climbing, sprinting, and tactics. His most distinctive technique involves leaning extremely far forward over his handlebars, nearly grazing the ground with his face, to drastically reduce wind resistance. When he unleashes his full power, he rolls up his jersey sleeves and shorts, extends his neck, and releases his muscle power to boost speed and bike control. This enables high-speed cornering. He also uses a sprinting posture with his head and back parallel to the ground and elbows thrust backward. He rides a modified, lightweight De Rosa bicycle with a frame that is purposely small for him, fitted with an elevated saddle and extended handlebars to accommodate his long limbs.

During the Inter-High, Midōsuji serves as a formidable rival to both Sohoku and Hakone Academy. He ties for first place on the first day and wins critical checkpoints on the second day. In the final sprint of the second day, he clenches his teeth so hard that his front tooth cracks, and he finishes in third place. Devastated, he announces his resignation from the team, but after an encounter with Sakamichi Onoda, who speaks of finding joy in riding with friends, Midōsuji reverses his decision, cuts his hair into a buzzcut, and returns to lead his team on the final day. He continues to evolve through subsequent competitions, including a grudge match against Naruko Shoukichi. His rivalry with Imaizumi remains a central thread. Beyond cycling, he enjoys anime, Western and British music, and children’s songs. His favorite foods are eel, tofu, and eggs.
