Description
Hajime Aoyagi is a student at Sohoku High School and a member of its bicycle club. He is initially a second-year student who does not make the Inter-High team, but he later becomes the club's vice-captain in his third year and secures a spot on the team. In his first year, Aoyagi meets Junta Teshima on their first day at Sohoku. Teshima sees him riding up the school's slope and approaches him, learning that Aoyagi's name means "first". This encounter inspires Teshima to continue cycling, and the two join the bicycle club together, forming a close partnership.
Personality wise, Aoyagi is known for being very quiet and speaking only when necessary. Despite his silent nature, he is thoughtful and cares deeply for his friends and teammates, particularly Teshima. He has a serious expression that can make him seem standoffish, but this belies a determined and loyal character. Aoyagi is also artistically inclined, enjoying visiting art galleries and possessing strong illustration skills, for which he earned top marks in middle school.
Aoyagi's primary motivation is to compete and succeed with his team, especially with his partner Teshima. After failing to qualify for the Inter-High in their first year, Aoyagi suggests to a despairing Teshima that they become a "team of two". This partnership defines their approach to cycling, with Aoyagi acting as the powerful legs to Teshima's strategic mind, a combination that leads them to win five out of six races. Aoyagi often feels guilty that he is the one who gets the victories, believing Teshima deserves equal recognition.
In the story, Aoyagi initially plays a supporting role, providing supplies and encouragement to his teammates during the Inter-High races. As a third-year and vice-captain, his role expands. He becomes a key member of the Inter-High team, taking on the role of a sprinter. He looks up to Jin Tadokoro as a mentor and emulates his cycling style, even adopting his eating habits. Aoyagi strives to support his team from the front and is a calming presence for younger members like Kaburagi. He refers to the Sohoku team as a "six-man-team," demonstrating his inclusive and team-oriented mindset.
The most significant relationship in Aoyagi's life is with Junta Teshima. Their bond is so strong that Teshima can often intuit what Aoyagi is thinking. Aoyagi believes in Teshima unconditionally, acting as a crucial mental support, especially during difficult races. He is shown crying with happiness when Teshima wins and admits he is afraid to go to the Inter-High without him. His other key relationship is with his mentor, Jin Tadokoro, whose guidance helps shape Aoyagi into a powerful sprinter.
Throughout the series, Aoyagi develops from a relatively average cyclist who failed the training camp into a formidable competitor. His training with Teshima and under Tadokoro's mentorship allows him to develop unique techniques. One is the "Supersonic Oxygen Human Bullet Aoyagi Train," where he draws in a large volume of air to expand his body and deliver a powerful burst of speed, though this technique is primarily useful for pulling teammates rather than for final sprints. For finishing sprints, he develops the "Bambi Style," which concentrates energy in his thighs to allow for a higher cadence and faster acceleration through corners, though it cannot be sustained for more than 150 meters.
