Description
Honoka Matsubara is a secondary student in the anime Kinmoza!: Pretty Days! who transitions from a background character to a more prominent role within the story. She is a classmate of Karen Kujo and becomes a close friend to the main group of girls. Honoka is known for her gentle and caring nature, though she is often shy and reserved, especially when meeting new people. Initially, this shyness can make her appear serious or intimidating to others, but this perception is a misunderstanding of her true personality, which is simply awkward and self-effacing.
Honoka has waist-length chocolate-brown hair, usually styled with bangs brushed to the left and a braided fringe held by a pale yellow bow. She has light brown eyes and is typically seen wearing the standard school uniform appropriate for the season. Her family owns a cafe, a detail that adds a small but personal touch to her background within the community.
One of Honoka's defining characteristics is her remarkably low opinion of herself. She often views herself as a commoner, especially when comparing herself to more glamorous or foreign-born individuals like Karen Kujo and Alice Cartelet. This insecurity is coupled with an obsession for girls with blonde hair, a trait she shares with Shinobu Omiya. This shared fascination forms an immediate bond between them, as Honoka loves to admire Shinobu's various fashion creations and cosplay, and she proves to be very supportive of Shinobu's interests.
In terms of her role in the story, Honoka is notable for being the first classmate to befriend Karen. Before they became close, she would quietly help Karen with small tasks, such as sharing snacks or trying to wake her if she fell asleep in class. Her care for Karen is deep and is implied to be a small infatuation; she harbors wishes to be more intimate, such as wiping chocolate from Karen's cheek, but often holds back out of fear that such actions would be too sudden. Her feelings for Karen motivate her to try and improve herself, as she feels she can become a better person just by thinking about her friend.
Key relationships are central to Honoka's development. Beyond her bond with Karen, she has a long-standing friendship with Kana Higurashi. They are childhood friends and both members of the school's tennis club, often spending time together when Honoka is not with the other girls. This friendship provides her with a stable and familiar connection. Her growth is most evident in how she overcomes her initial reticence to become more integrated with the wider group of friends. Her ability to get along with the energetic Shinobu shows her capacity to step outside her comfort zone and connect with others over shared passions.
Regarding notable abilities, Honoka is a member of the tennis club and plays the sport during the story. While playing, she has a memorable quirk of shouting words like "blonde" or "hair" when serving, which she uses to focus herself. She also possesses an unusual talent for balancing on a ball, a skill that is hinted at in the second season's theme song and which she finally demonstrates during the series. This hidden talent serves as a small but delightful reflection of her quiet, unexpected depth. Her caring nature is perhaps her greatest strength, as her consistent kindness and supportiveness make her a reliable and beloved friend to the rest of the cast.
