Description
Kazuki Migiwa is a central figure in the narrative, known by the moniker the Witch. Her background is deeply intertwined with the history of the Buranki, the giant mechanical beings that shape the world of the series. Migiwa is a unique existence, revealed to be as much a Buranki as she is human, a hybrid born from the mingling of the ancient giants' material with humanity. From a young age, she demonstrated extraordinary power, acting as a Heart user capable of piloting the powerful Buranki known as Oubu with four other Bubuki users acting as its limbs. In her youth, she was best friends with Reoko Banryu, another Heart user, but their friendship ended in a catastrophic battle. Migiwa severely injured Reoko and imprisoned her for eight years, an act that set the stage for the series' central conflict.

Migiwa's personality is marked by a profound, self-destructive sense of duty and a tragic inclination toward self-sacrifice. She constantly places herself in extreme danger, believing she must bear the heaviest burdens alone to protect others. This manifests as an almost compulsive need to confront threats directly, often with plans that offer little guarantee of survival, and she repeatedly leaves her loved ones in anguish over her fate. This behavior is a key driver of the plot and deeply affects her children, who are frequently left to wonder if she is alive or dead. Her motivations are rooted in protecting the Buranki and the world from larger threats, a mission that she places above all personal connections, including her responsibilities as a mother.

At the start of the story, Migiwa lives with her family on a floating island called Treasure Island, acting as a guardian to the many sleeping Buranki there. When the Buranki begin to awaken and endanger her children, Azuma and Kaoruko, she makes the pivotal decision to send them, along with their father, down to the safety of Earth aboard the Buranki Oubu. She remains behind on the descending island to face the danger herself. For most of the first season, her fate is a mystery, leaving her children to believe she might be dead. She later reappears, not to reunite with her family, but to continue her mission, which eventually involves confronting the main antagonist, Guy, in his own headquarters. Her role culminates in a final, complex sacrifice: she travels back in time to merge with the Buranki Entei, becoming its brain to keep her old friend Reoko alive for fourteen years, a role in which she lost her own identity until the final moments of the series.

Her most significant relationships are with her children and her former best friend. With her son, Azuma, she shares a connection as the previous Heart of Oubu, a power he inherits. Their interactions are tragic, defined by abandonment and her eventual death before his eyes, which leaves him permanently scarred. Her relationship with her daughter, Kaoruko, is even more strained. Migiwa appears to neglect Kaoruko, showing little concern for her well-being and, in one instance, even causing her excruciating pain with her presence. Kaoruko is left feeling abandoned and unloved. In stark contrast, her relationship with Reoko Banryu is the emotional core of the past conflict. Despite injuring and imprisoning her, Migiwa’s final act is one of profound atonement, sacrificing her own identity to give Reoko a second chance at life. This act reveals that her seemingly cruel actions were part of a larger, inscrutable plan driven by a sense of cosmic duty.

Over the course of the story, Migiwa does not undergo a typical character arc of growth and change. Instead, her development is a deepening of her pre-established traits, leading to an apotheosis of sacrifice. She begins as a mysterious, possibly dead figure and is gradually revealed to be an immensely powerful and tragic force. Her final transformation involves gaining the ability to traverse time, a power she uses not to change her personal mistakes but to fulfill what she sees as her ultimate purpose. This act cements her as a tragic martyr whose love for her friend is expressed through a terrible, self-erasing act of salvation, leaving her children to inherit only the complicated legacy of her absence.

As a Heart user, Migiwa possesses the core ability to pilot a Buranki, but her powers extend far beyond a normal user's. She is known as the Witch for her immense proficiency, which includes a highly advanced manipulation of Rinzo, the force that powers Buranki and Bubuki. Her mastery is so great that she is able to seamlessly travel through time, a feat that is considered a massive leap in capability. Furthermore, her unique nature as a Buranki-human hybrid may be the source of her superior powers, allowing her to operate on a level separate from other users. Her final and most notable ability is to serve as the brain of a Buranki, a role that involves merging her consciousness with the giant being to sustain it, an act that required her to sacrifice her personal identity and memories.
