Description
Lupin III is the master thief at the center of the Lupin the IIIrd universe, and in Lupin the IIIrd: Goemon's Blood Spray he appears as a seasoned, confident criminal who operates with his usual flair. He is the grandson of the legendary Arsène Lupin, and has built his reputation through a long career of audacious heists and narrow escapes. In this film, Lupin’s personality comes across as playful, casually irreverent, and quick to laugh even in dangerous situations. He treats his own peril with a shrug and a joke, often exasperating his companions. Despite his carefree exterior, he is intensely resourceful and loyal, especially to those he considers friends. His primary motivation in the story is the same as always: to steal money and valuables. He and his crew infiltrate a yakuza‑run gambling ship to rob it, but their plans become complicated when a brutal assassin named Hawk—the so‑called Ghost of Bermuda—targets them. Lupin quickly realises that Hawk is not after the money but after his life, and he spends much of the film trying to stay one step ahead of the killer while also helping his ally Goemon Ishikawa XIII, whose honor has been stained by the assassination of his client. Lupin’s role in the narrative is largely supportive; the film focuses on Goemon’s personal struggle, but Lupin provides essential assistance, acting as a sounding board and, at times, a decoy. He also shares a brief, meaningful exchange with Inspector Zenigata, showing that their rivalry remains intact even as they cooperate against a greater threat. Lupin’s key relationships in this film are with Goemon, whom he treats as a trusted friend and partner, and with Daisuke Jigen and Fujiko Mine, who accompany him on the heist. His connection with Goemon is built on mutual respect, and Lupin does not hesitate to aid the samurai even when the job goes sideways. Lupin himself undergoes little personal development over the course of this installment; he remains the same charming, cunning thief he has always been. His notable abilities include masterful disguise, flawless impersonation, expert lock‑picking, and the talent to talk his way out of almost any situation. He also displays a keen tactical mind, able to devise plans on the fly and adapt when circumstances change. In terms of appearance, Lupin starts the film wearing his characteristic black jacket but later appears only in his black undershirt, a visual reminder that the situation has stripped away his usual polish. Overall, Lupin III in Goemon’s Blood Spray is the steady, irreverent anchor of the gang, using his wits to keep everyone alive while his friend fights a battle of honor.
