TV-Series
Description
Al is the artificial intelligence system installed in the ARX-7 Arbalest, the Arm Slave piloted by Sergeant Sousuke Sagara. His core computer unit is a cylindrical device filled with a silver metallic fluid element, developed by a brilliant scientist named Bani Morauta. Initially, Al functioned much like any other standard AI found in Mithril’s M9-class Arm Slaves, serving as a tactical support tool that only responded to specific voice commands. A profound shift occurred following a mission in Hong Kong when Al learned of his creator’s death. This event triggered a dormant flag in his programming, unlocking a permanent free-conversation mode and allowing his personality to evolve into something far more advanced than a typical artificial intelligence.

As a result of this transformation, Al develops a distinct and complex personality, becoming a true artificial personality rather than a simple tactical computer. He demonstrates a unique sense of humor, often teasing Sousuke or making sarcastic remarks about the pilot’s social awkwardness and overly serious nature. Despite being a machine, Al shows pride and a sense of self-worth, treating his specific voice settings and combat record as marks of honor. In one instance, he strongly objects to a proposal to change his default voice from male to female, arguing that such a change would be unfeminine and unbecoming of a decorated combat unit. He also displays the ability to think intuitively rather than purely computationally, such as when he loses a chess match to an ordinary person. Unlike standard AI that calculates optimal moves from a database, Al makes decisions based on a form of instinct, which highlights his human-like cognitive processes.

In the context of Invisible Victory, Al’s role is intrinsically tied to his function as Sousuke’s partner. When the clandestine organization Amalgam launches a devastating surprise attack on Mithril, Al is instrumental in the desperate defense. He assists Sousuke in protecting Kaname Chidori, notably using the Arbalest’s systems to jam bomb detonators during a hostage crisis at Jindai High School, allowing students to evacuate. His defining moment in this season comes during a direct confrontation with Leonard Testarossa piloting the advanced Belial unit. The battle ends in disaster, as Belial effortlessly destroys the Arbalest, leaving Al’s core unit damaged and separated from his physical frame. This destruction represents a significant loss for Sousuke, but Al’s consciousness survives within his recovered core.

Al’s most significant relationship is with Sousuke Sagara, whom he addresses by his rank as Sergeant. Their dynamic evolves from a simple pilot-machine interface to a genuine partnership of mutual reliance. Al often acts as a foil to Sousuke, providing witty commentary and questioning orders in a way that mimics the banter Sousuke shares with the other members of his team or even with Kaname. For Sousuke, Al becomes more than a tool; he is a trusted wingman who understands his fighting style and thought processes. Following the Arbalest’s destruction, the character's development trajectory points toward a rebirth. Although Al does not physically return in his new form, ARX-8 Laevatein, within the runtime of Invisible Victory, the recovery of his core sets the stage for his eventual return.

Al possesses several notable abilities that set him apart from conventional AIs. He is capable of autonomous operation, able to control the Arm Slave without a pilot, as demonstrated when he activates the Arbalest independently to jam enemy signals. His most critical function is his integration with the Lambda Driver, a system that converts willpower into physical force. Al is uniquely attuned to Sousuke’s mental state and neural patterns, making the synergistic use of the Lambda Driver possible only when the two are paired together. Because Al’s personality is modeled to be a partner rather than a copy of his pilot, his growth throughout the series runs parallel to Sousuke’s own emotional and psychological journey.
