Description
Albert Heinrich, designated Cyborg 004, is a central figure in the Cyborg 009: Call of Justice film trilogy. His origin story is one of profound tragedy rooted in the geopolitical tensions of Cold War-era Germany. Originally from East Germany, Heinrich was a young man attempting to flee to the West with his fiancée, Hilda, seeking a better life. Their escape attempt ended in disaster when their vehicle came under fire from border guards, resulting in Hilda's death and leaving Heinrich himself mortally wounded. The secret international arms syndicate known as Black Ghost arrived at the scene under the guise of offering medical aid, instead kidnapping him and subjecting him to their cyborg conversion program. The catastrophic damage to his body necessitated the most extensive cybernetic augmentation of all the 00 Cyborgs, with his organic form reduced to only his brain and spinal cord, transforming him into a humanoid weapons platform.
The psychological toll of this transformation was as severe as the physical one. Wracked with grief over the loss of Hilda and despair over his new existence as a living weapon, Heinrich developed severe suicidal tendencies. These mental health struggles, compounded by chronic physical pain from his early-model cybernetics, led Black Ghost to deem him too unstable for use. As a result, he was placed into cryogenic stasis for decades alongside other first-generation prototypes until technology advanced enough to stabilize his systems. This prolonged freeze makes him chronologically the oldest member of the team, though he retains the physical appearance of a man in his early thirties.
In Cyborg 009: Call of Justice, Heinrich has been living a quiet, peaceful life following the establishment of a global peacekeeping force that relieved the cyborgs of their active duties. However, this retirement is cut short when a journalist named Lucy Davenport contacts him to expose a new and mysterious threat known as the Blessed, an ancient race of superhuman beings. This call to action reunites him with his fellow cyborgs to confront this new enemy. During this period, his personality is defined by the stoic and cynical demeanor forged from his long life of conflict and loss. Despite his gruff exterior, he possesses a keen and philosophical mind, deeply contemplative about the nature of humanity, war, and his own existence. He has a strong disgust for warfare and its profiteers, a direct rejection of the purpose Black Ghost designed him for. He serves as an older brother figure within the group, particularly to the younger members, offering strategic advice and protection, often clashing with the hot-headed Jet Link (Cyborg 002) while sharing a bond of mutual loyalty cultivated through shared trauma.
As a result of his extreme augmentation, Heinrich is essentially a walking arsenal. His abilities are entirely integrated into his cybernetic frame, making him the team's primary artillery and heavy weapons specialist. His signature weapons include rapid-fire machine guns concealed within the fingertips of one hand, an electromagnetic laser knife in the other that can cut through almost any material, and retractable missile launchers built into his knees that activate when he assumes a crouching or kneeling position. He also carries a conventional super gun as a sidearm. While his new mechanics grant him enhanced durability and resilience, his most notable role in the story is that of a tactician and frontline combatant, using his formidable arsenal and combat experience to directly engage enemy forces. His ongoing character arc involves reconciling his humanity with his mechanical body, transitioning from initial self-loathing and isolation to finding a sense of family and purpose through his bonds with the other cyborgs.
