Description
Catalina Canetti is a significant character in the Cyborg 009: Call of Justice storyline. She holds the rank of lieutenant and serves as the second-in-command of the United Nations Guardians, an elite anti-terrorism special forces unit. Her demeanor is calm, collected, and stoic; she rarely displays emotion and carries out her assigned duties without visible hesitation, presenting a professional and formidable exterior as a military operative.

Initially, Catalina is placed in opposition to the 00 Cyborgs. She is ordered to pursue and apprehend them after they are framed for a crime they did not commit, and she leads Guardian forces in several attempts to capture them. However, her role in the story is more complex than that of a straightforward antagonist. She carries an important secret that is unknown even to her fellow unit members, a secret that gradually unravels as the plot progresses.

It is eventually revealed that Catalina is a secret member of the Blessed, an ancient and powerful organization of superhumans who have manipulated human history from the shadows. Despite this allegiance, her loyalty is not absolute. During a confrontation with the Blessed leader, she defects to the side of the 00 Cyborgs, citing an unforeseen factor as her reason for turning. She reveals that this factor is specifically 009 himself and his unique and puzzling ability to manipulate time, which she found to be an anomaly that disrupted the Blessed’s plans.

After her defection, she actively works with the 00 Cyborgs to oppose the Blessed, providing crucial information about their goals and her own powers. She joins the final battle against the primary antagonist, Emperor. In retaliation for her betrayal, Emperor uses his immense psychic abilities to first erase her memories of her bond with 009 and then, seeing that she still cannot bring herself to kill the cyborg, completely wipes her mind, reducing her to little more than basic instincts. Despite this, Catalina demonstrates incredible willpower, managing to hold onto a fragment of her consciousness long enough to link Emperor’s mind with 009’s, subjecting the villain to the same terrifying void that 009 experiences when he accelerates. For this act of defiance, Emperor fatally strikes her, and she dies in 009’s arms after telling him she will never forget him. Her story arc is therefore a tragic one, moving from an antagonist to a valuable ally, culminating in a final act of redemption that results in her death.

Regarding her abilities, aside from the standard combat training and tactical skills expected of a UN Guardian lieutenant, she possesses her own distinct superhuman powers as a member of the Blessed. While the specific full scope of her abilities is not extensively detailed, she is capable of assisting 001 and 009 in the final battle against Emperor and demonstrates a powerful psychic technique by forcibly linking the minds of Emperor and 009. She is also noted for her distinctive costume, a form-fitting catsuit that is part of her official Guardian uniform.
