Yui Makino is a Japanese voice actress, singer, and pianist born on January 19, 1986, in Tokyo. She is affiliated with the talent agency Amuse, Inc. Her career is notable for the deep connection between her formal training as a classical pianist and her work in both voice acting and music performance.
Makino's artistic foundation was established at a very young age. She began learning the piano when she was four years old. Her talent was recognized early by film director Shunji Iwai, and from the age of eight to seventeen, she performed piano solos on the soundtracks of his films Love Letter, All About Lily Chou-Chou, and Hana and Alice. She later graduated from the piano department of the Tokyo College of Music.
Her professional voice acting debut came in 2005 when she was cast as the heroine Sakura in the anime adaptation of the popular manga Tsubasa Chronicle. This role immediately established her as a leading voice actress. In the same year, she was discovered by the renowned composer Yoko Kanno, leading to her debut as a singer with the ending theme song Omna Magni for the anime Sousei no Aquarion. Her music career quickly gained recognition, particularly for her performances of theme songs for the Aria anime series.
