Description
Jen May-Yu is a fifteen-year-old girl who hails from Shanghai and is the older twin sister of Jen May-Yen. Before the events of the story, her family owned a Chinese restaurant called the Meifang Restaurant, where she acted as the restaurant's poster girl, a detail that contrasts sharply with her personal dislike for Chinese food. Her life was irrevocably changed by the battles against the Gards-orm, the enemy forces in her world. During a failed operation to recapture the Shanghai server, she lost her entire family, a traumatic event that deeply shapes her personality and actions throughout the narrative.

In terms of personality, Jen May-Yu is known for having a tough, harsh, and sometimes cold demeanor. This is especially true in her early interactions with the protagonist, Kyo Sogoru. Kyo himself once described her to another character, Ryoko, as the twin with the worse personality. However, this severe exterior masks a more vulnerable interior. She is revealed to be quite sensitive, and in high-stress combat situations, she can become extremely tense to the point of crying and being unable to function effectively in her duties as a Wizard. This fragility is a key aspect of her character, showing that her tough attitude is partly a defense mechanism against her deep emotional pain.

Her motivations are initially driven by grief and resentment. The source of her particular animosity toward Kyo stems from a careless, thoughtless remark he made about her situation without understanding the full tragedy of her family's loss. Her primary role in the story is as a Wizard, a type of crew member and battle supporter. Most frequently, she serves as the dedicated Wizard for the pilot Mao Lu-Shen, helping to control his Zega mecha known as Garuda. However, her skills also allow her to act as a temporary partner for Kyo, serving as his Wizard aboard his mecha, the Altair.

Her key relationships are with her twin sister, Mei-Yen, and with Kyo. The relationship with her sister is characterized by their contrasting appearances—May-Yu has a distinctive short bob haircut compared to Mei-Yen's longer hair—and their opposing personalities. While she is often harsh and strict, her sister is generally more level-headed and pragmatic. The central arc of her development involves her reconciliation with Kyo. This occurs after she is assigned to work as his Wizard, and through their shared duty and battles, they come to understand each other, leading her to finally forgive him for his past mistake.

Further depth is added to her character by information revealed outside of the main anime series. A CD drama expands on her feelings, revealing that she actually had a one-sided love for the previous version of Kyo Sogoru. Her prolonged and intense anger toward the current Kyo is implied to be a result of the painful contrast she perceives between him and the person she once loved. In the movie adaptation, titled Zegapain ADP, her story is presented with some differences. In this version, she is already actively working alongside her sister and Mao Lu-Shen even before Kyo awakens to his role as a Celebrant. Regardless of the medium, Jen May-Yu remains a character defined by her resilience in the face of tragedy, her acerbic wit, and a hidden capacity for deep emotion and eventual understanding.
