Description
Francesca is the titular protagonist of the 2014 anime series that bears her name, a character originally created as a mascot to promote the culture and tourism of Hokkaido, Japan. In the narrative, she is an undead being, specifically a zombie, who awakens in the modern era with little memory of her past life.

Her personality is marked by a stark duality. In her primary state, she is depicted as a sweet and somewhat simple-minded girl with an enormous, insatiable appetite for food, which serves as a key motivation for her adventures. However, this innocent exterior belies a more dangerous nature. Francesca possesses a menacing evil side, a powerful and malevolent alter ego that poses a significant threat to those around her. A significant portion of the story revolves around this internal conflict, as her companions seek to understand this darkness and prevent it from taking full control. Another quirk of her undead state is her absent-mindedness; she often forgets things, and at one point, her brain literally escapes from her head, leading to a more docile and vacant version of herself.

Francesca's primary role in the story is as an unlikely defender of Hokkaido, her home and her reason for being. The central conflict pits her and her allies against the revived members of the Shinsengumi, a historical special police force from Japan's Bakumatsu period, who now plot to conquer the region. Despite her amnesia, she is driven to protect her beloved home, often motivated by a desire to sample its vast array of culinary delights.

She does not face this threat alone. The most prominent figure in her life is the Exorcist, a determined and often exasperated woman whose job is to deal with undead creatures. Despite initially seeing Francesca as a threat, the Exorcist becomes her primary companion and protector, constantly striving to keep her in check. Other key relationships include her pet, a small dog-like creature named Franken, and a living statue of the American biologist Dr. Clark, who acts as a fatherly mentor figure. Throughout the series, she also interacts with the members of the Shinsengumi, who, while being antagonists, are often portrayed as bumbling or honorable characters, leading to comedic and action-packed encounters.

As an undead being, Francesca possesses several notable supernatural abilities. Her most distinctive power is the ability to detach and freely control parts of her own body, which she uses for both comedic effect and in combat. This includes the bizarre ability to have her severed brain run around on its own. She also possesses superhuman strength and durability, allowing her to withstand attacks and perform feats of immense power, such as throwing objects with enough force to sink a ship. Throughout the story, her development focuses on her struggle to understand and suppress her evil alter ego while piecing together fragments of her forgotten past to understand why she was created and what her true purpose is.
