Description
Edna is an Earth seraph, a type of invisible spiritual being, who appears in the anime Tales of Zestiria the X. She has a youthful appearance, standing at 145 centimeters tall, with long blonde hair that fades into a brighter yellow at the tips and blue eyes. She is often seen carrying a parasol, which also serves as her primary weapon, and hanging from it is a small doll-like charm called a Normin. Her chosen name is Edna, but her true name as a seraph is Hephsin Yulind.
In terms of personality, Edna presents a facade of apathy and boredom, speaking with a calm, almost monotone voice that rarely betrays her inner feelings. She is deeply cynical and distrusts humanity, viewing them as self-centered and weak for losing their faith in seraphim and allowing malevolence to spread throughout the world. A significant part of her personality is a sharp, teasing nature. She enjoys using dry humor, clever nicknames, and misleading statements to provoke and confuse those around her, particularly targeting individuals who are easy to rile up or are overly earnest. This mocking behavior, however, is not a sign of malice but rather an awkward way of interacting with people she has come to like. Beneath this tough exterior, Edna is profoundly lonely and carries a deep well of sadness, stemming from a long life spent in isolation.
Edna's background and motivations are intrinsically tied to her older brother, Eizen. For much of her very long life, which spans over a thousand years, she lived with him atop Rayfalke Spiritcrest. Due to a curse that brought misfortune to those around him, Eizen chose to leave his sister to protect her, a decision that left her feeling bitter and abandoned. She remained alone on the mountain, the only companion to her brother who eventually succumbed to malevolence and transformed into a mindless, fearsome dragon. Despite the danger, Edna refused to leave him, acting as a guardian of the mountain and secretly searching for a way to restore him, even as she lost hope of ever finding one.
Her role in the story begins when the Shepherd Sorey and the seraph Lailah arrive at her mountain seeking answers about dragons. She is initially hostile and reluctant to engage with them, but Sorey's sincere desire to find a non-lethal way to save her brother, rather than simply kill him, gives her a renewed sense of hope. She forms a sub-contract with Sorey, officially joining his party to help him on his journey while also seeking a way to cure Eizen. Her motivations are deeply personal; while she agrees with the group's goal to stop the Lord of Calamity, her primary drive is her brother's salvation and a long-suppressed desire to leave the mountain and see the world.
Key relationships define her character arc. Her bond with her brother Eizen is the most significant and emotional part of her life, the one subject that breaks through her detached demeanor and causes her to act impulsively. She also clashes frequently with the seraph Zaveid, a friend of Eizen's who believes the merciful action is to euthanize the dragon, leading to a tense but understanding rivalry between them. Within Sorey's party, she develops a particular dynamic with the water seraph Mikleo and the human squire Rose, who often become the targets of her teasing. Through her travels with Sorey, who represents an idealistic and pure-hearted human, her distrust of humanity begins to soften. She learns to distinguish between good and bad humans, and while she never loses her cynical edge, she finds a sense of purpose and belonging, becoming a valued protector of her new friends.
Edna's notable abilities stem from her nature as an Earth seraph, granting her mastery over earth-based magic and artes. She uses her umbrella as a conduit for these powers, allowing her to summon rock lances, manipulate the ground, and create defensive barriers for her allies. Despite her small stature, she is a powerful and skilled combatant, capable of holding her own against large hellions and dragons. Her fighting style is practical and focused on winning, showing a different side to her usually languid personality. Over the course of the series, her ability to work in tandem with her human companions grows, eventually achieving a powerful form of cooperation known as a Kamui fusion with Alisha.
