Description
Kenichi Nakajima is a 29-year-old Japanese salaryman who appears as the first client of the enigmatic salesman Fukuzou Moguro in The Laughing Salesman NEW. Physically, Nakajima is depicted as a scrawny and pale man. He typically wears a professional work outfit consisting of a blue overcoat, a white suit, blue pants, and a pink tie.

Nakajima's personality is defined by a deep sense of insecurity and anxiety. He is described by a friend as a very serious individual, but this seriousness manifests as an inability to find joy or satisfaction in his daily life. This has led to a profound sense of loneliness, leaving him emotionally vulnerable and eager for any form of affection or escape from his dreary existence. His life is in a rut, and he is portrayed as a typical white-collar worker struggling with the monotony of his routine.

In the story, Nakajima serves as a perfect example of the kind of lost soul that Moguro preys upon. His role is to illustrate the initial temptation that the salesman offers. His life takes a turn when a coworker named Sakamaki invites him to a special hostess club called Daydream during their lunch break. It is here that he meets Moguro, who facilitates Nakajima's access to this fantasy world. Nakajima becomes elated when a girl at the club named Haruka shows him affection, highlighting how easily he is swayed by the illusion of companionship.

Nakajima's key relationship is with his friend Sakamaki, who introduces him to the Daydream club. This dynamic is notably different from the original manga source material, where a similar character uses the discovery to blackmail Nakajima. In The Laughing Salesman NEW, Sakamaki is more benevolent, even advising Nakajima to return home after work instead of indulging his desires at the club again. His other significant, though fleeting, relationship is with Haruka, the hostess whose fabricated kindness provides him with a temporary escape from his loneliness.

The character's design and role are directly based on Nakajima Seishi, who was the first client of Moguro Fukuzou in the original manga created by Fujiko Fujio. This connection roots Kenichi Nakajima in the long history of the property, serving as a modern interpretation of the archetypal Moguro customer. No notable abilities are associated with this character; his significance is derived entirely from his psychological state and his interactions with the salesman.
