TV-Series
Description
Kyōsuke Karasuma is an A-rank agent of the Border defense organization and a member of the Tamakoma Branch, where he serves as a combatant in Tamakoma First. He joined Border approximately three years before the main story and was originally part of the prestigious Tachikawa Squad before transferring to Tamakoma Branch about a year prior to the events of the series. Karasuma is a middle-range All-Rounder, meaning he is proficient in both close-quarters combat with a Kogetsu blade and mid-range gunner attacks using an assault rifle loaded with Asteroid and Viper bullets. He also carries the defensive trigger Escudo, which he uses to create barriers for protection or to trap enemies.
Karasuma’s personality is often described as cool and deadpan, but he has a laid-back and friendly nature beneath his serious exterior. He possesses a dry sense of humor and frequently teases his teammate Konami Kirie by telling obvious lies with a straight face, a habit that frustrates her but highlights his playful side. Despite this, he is highly responsible, sincere, and patient, especially when teaching others. He is regarded as an excellent mentor; his own mentor is Reiji Kizaki, from whom he inherited his signature impassive expression. Karasuma takes his role as a teacher seriously and tailors his guidance to each student’s strengths and weaknesses. He was assigned to train Osamu Mikumo, helping the young agent develop strategic thinking and effective trigger use despite Osamu’s limited trion reserves. He also previously mentored Ai Kitora, who holds him in high regard.
Karasuma’s motivations are rooted in protecting his comrades and supporting his family. He comes from a large household as the eldest of seven siblings, and he works multiple part-time jobs outside of Border to help provide for them. His sense of responsibility extends to the battlefield, where he prioritizes the safety of his teammates and is willing to risk himself to buy them time. During the large-scale invasion by the Aftokrator forces, Karasuma activated his custom trigger Geist to delay the enemy commander Hyrein, giving Osamu and Chika Amatori precious minutes to reach safety. Although he was forced to bail out, his sacrifice shifted the course of the battle and demonstrated his dedication.
Karasuma’s most notable ability is Geist, a prototype trigger developed specifically for him by the Tamakoma engineering team. Geist forcibly destabilizes the user’s trion body to funnel massive amounts of trion into specific functions, dramatically boosting either attack power, speed, or shooting capabilities depending on the mode selected. However, the strain is extreme; trion leaks constantly from the body, and the trigger can only be sustained for a maximum of about 284 seconds before the user is forced to emergency bail out. This makes it a high-risk, high-reward tool that requires precise timing and situational awareness. Karasuma’s calm and analytical nature allows him to use Geist effectively, often saving its activation for critical moments.
Key relationships define Karasuma’s role in the story. He shares a close bond with his Tamakoma First teammates: Kizaki, whom he respects deeply, and Konami, whom he enjoys teasing but fights alongside with seamless coordination. He has a friendly rapport with Jin Yuichi, who gave him hand-me-down clothing and respects his abilities. Karasuma also remains on good terms with his former captain, Tachikawa Kei, who gave him the nickname “Torimaru” after misreading his name. Among younger agents, Ai Kitora carries a quiet admiration for him, and Yoko Katori is a vocal fan. Conversely, the agent Yuiga Yugo harbors a one-sided resentment toward him.
Throughout the series, Karasuma demonstrates steady growth, both as a combatant and as a guide. He plays a pivotal role in preparing Tamakoma Second for the B-rank wars, even impersonating the formidable Ninomiya Masaki in a training simulation to help Osamu’s team develop counter-strategies. His calm, reliable presence and willingness to put himself on the line for others make him a cornerstone of the Tamakoma Branch and a steadying influence on the younger generation of agents.
