Description
Boro is a major antagonist in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, serving as a prominent member of the secretive criminal organization known as Kara, where he holds the rank of Inner. Beyond his role in Kara, he is also the charismatic and deceptive leader of a cult that worships the Ōtsutsuki clan, through which he spreads his influence and gathers followers. His background is rooted in fanaticism; he employs a dishonest strategy of secretly unleashing plagues on communities only to appear as a savior who cures them, thereby earning the trust and devotion of the populace. Through his cult, he preaches a twisted version of salvation, promoting the Infinite Tsukuyomi as a path to global peace and expressing a deep-seated resentment toward the Five Great Shinobi Nations for thwarting the Ōtsutsuki clan's plans.
In terms of personality, Boro is characterized by a profound overconfidence and a smug, condescending attitude, particularly when facing opponents he deems beneath him, such as the young Team 7. He possesses a teasing and mocking side, as shown when he taunts his fellow Kara Inner, Delta, over her failures. Despite his arrogance, he is a committed and vigilant individual, remaining intensely focused on his assigned mission to guard the sealed Seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki. He is very knowledgeable and analytical, quickly assessing threats, but remains utterly devoted to Kara's goals and shows little patience for distractions, even finding joy when discovering Boruto's value as a vessel for Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki.
Boro is a tall, heavily-built middle-aged man with a beard and mustache. His most distinctive features are the trio of tattoos on his face that form the Roman numeral three, as well as numerous disc-like objects embedded at various points on his body, including his temples, pectorals, forearms, shoulder-blades, and hips. His body has been heavily modified with scientific ninja tools, and it is implied these modifications have eliminated gender-based anatomical characteristics.
As an Inner of Kara, Boro is considered monstrously powerful, possessing a diverse and deadly arsenal of abilities. He has tremendous physical strength, able to lift and hurl the massive pot containing Naruto with one hand, and is deceptively fast and highly resilient. In terms of ninjutsu, he can utilize Fire, Earth, and Water Release. More significantly, he can combine Fire and Earth Release to create Lava Release, which he uses to generate a potent, corrosive acid capable of melting objects and reshaping the battlefield.
The most formidable aspects of Boro's power come from his scientific ninja tool modifications. He can release a fast-acting virus in the form of a dark mist that gradually paralyzes those who come into contact with it. Because this mist is physical matter rather than chakra, it cannot be absorbed by a Kāma, making it especially dangerous to Boruto and Kawaki. Boro himself carries the antibodies in his bloodstream, rendering him immune to his own virus. His most notable ability is a powerful regenerative technique facilitated by a special core implanted in his body. This core allows him to instantly and rapidly heal from virtually any physical damage, including the complete obliteration of his head, effectively making him appear immortal. However, this regeneration is entirely dependent on the core; if the core is destroyed or removed, his body loses its stability, mutates into a massive, uncontrolled form, and he becomes vulnerable to being permanently defeated.
Within the story, Boro's primary role is as a guardian. After Jigen defeats and seals Naruto away in a different dimension, Boro is tasked with watching over the container. He serves as a major obstacle for the protagonist, Boruto Uzumaki, who leads a team consisting of Sarada Uchiha, Mitsuki, and Kawaki to rescue the Seventh Hokage. His key relationships are primarily functional and antagonistic. He is utterly loyal to Jigen, the leader of Kara, and follows his orders without question. He views Kawaki, another former Kara vessel, as a prized asset that has gone astray due to his attachments to Konoha, and he vows to retrain him from scratch. His relationship with Team 7 is one of predator and prey; he initially dismisses them as children but grows increasingly impressed by their cunning and teamwork as they systematically counter his abilities.
Boro undergoes significant development during his single, extended battle. He begins the fight as an overwhelmingly confident and seemingly invincible foe, easily shrugging off the team's most powerful attacks. His arrogance remains intact even when Sarada figures out the secret of his virus, as he still believes his regeneration makes him untouchable. However, the tables turn when Team 7 uses his own antibodies against him to cure the virus and, led by Kawaki's knowledge of Kara's technology, Sarada uses her Sharingan to locate and destroy his regenerative core. With his core destroyed, Boro's body mutates into a grotesque, monstrous form, and he loses his reason, becoming a raging beast. In this state, he is ultimately and effortlessly obliterated by Boruto, who has been momentarily taken over by the Ōtsutsuki Momoshiki. This final defeat highlights that for all his boasts of immortality, his power was ultimately an artificial construct with a fatal flaw.
