Description
Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki is a character who appears as a primary antagonist in the narrative of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. He is a member of the Ōtsutsuki clan, a family of powerful, extraterrestrial beings who travel across dimensions to harvest the chakra of worlds by cultivating God Trees into chakra fruits. Kinshiki serves as the loyal partner, guardian, and adoptive father figure to Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki, another prominent member of the main family of their clan.
Physically, Kinshiki is an imposing figure. He is exceptionally tall and burly, with a muscular frame that towers over most opponents, allowing Momoshiki to comfortably sit on his shoulder. He possesses the pale skin and light, blue-tinted or grey hair characteristic of his clan. A notable facial feature is a prominent horn protruding from his forehead, which he loses during an early confrontation with Sasuke Uchiha. Like all of his kin, Kinshiki possesses the Byakugan, a dōjutsu (eye technique) that grants him a near-360-degree field of vision, the ability to see through objects, and sight of a person's chakra pathway system. He wears traditional white and grey robes, often draping part of the garment over his head and shoulders.
Kinshiki's personality is defined by unwavering loyalty and a stoic sense of duty. He is completely devoted to Momoshiki, whom he refers to with the honorific "sama," signifying his deep respect and subservient role. Despite being the parent figure, Kinshiki unwaveringly follows Momoshiki's orders and acts as his primary enforcer and bodyguard. He is a formidable and fierce combatant who takes his enemies seriously, engaging powerful opponents like Sasuke Uchiha without hesitation. While generally composed, Kinshiki can be vindictive and driven by pride; after Sasuke cuts off his horn, he becomes determined to kill the Uchiha in revenge, even targeting his daughter, Sarada, during the chaos of their attack on Konohagakure. His loyalty ultimately transcends even his own life, as he willingly offers himself to be transformed into a chakra pill for Momoshiki to consume, viewing it as the ultimate act of passing on his power, just as his own guardian had done for him in the past. He shows no regard for any beings outside of his clan, viewing humans as inferior forms of life.
The motivations of Kinshiki are directly tied to the mission of the Ōtsutsuki clan. He and Momoshiki become curious as to why their clan member, Kaguya, had failed to deliver a chakra fruit from Earth for over a millennium. They journey to her dimension to investigate and discover that she had betrayed the clan, leading them to decide to harvest the planet's chakra themselves. Their goal is to collect the immense chakra of the Nine-Tailed Beast sealed within Naruto Uzumaki and the Eight-Tailed Beast within Killer B in order to create a new chakra fruit and achieve even greater power.
In the story, Kinshiki's role is that of the powerful enforcer and secondary antagonist. He first appears battling Sasuke in one of Kaguya's abandoned dimensions. He later accompanies Momoshiki to Earth, where they crush the Chunin Exams and kidnap a weakened Naruto. When a rescue team composed of the Five Kage, Sasuke, and Boruto Uzumaki arrives in Momoshiki's dimension to save Naruto, Kinshiki engages several of the Kage in combat. He demonstrates his immense power by felling a God Tree with a single swing of his weapon and proves to be a significant threat, even managing to overwhelm several Kage-level opponents working in tandem. His personal vendetta against Sasuke continues during this battle. Ultimately, when Momoshiki is pressed by the combined forces of his enemies, Kinshiki makes the ultimate sacrifice, reminding his master of their clan's tradition and urging him to consume his chakra without hesitation. Momoshiki transforms Kinshiki into a massive chakra fruit and devours him, absorbing his power and transforming into a far more powerful and monstrous form. This act completes Kinshiki's arc, ending his life but fulfilling his sole purpose of serving and empowering his foster son.
Kinshiki's key relationships are few but intensely focused. His central bond is with his foster son, Momoshiki. He serves as Momoshiki's protector, subordinate, and parental figure, a relationship defined by absolute fealty and self-sacrifice on Kinshiki's part. On the opposing side, he develops a strong rivalry with Sasuke Uchiha, born from the humiliation of losing his horn and Sasuke's repeated interference. He also briefly clashes with several of the Kage, including Kurotsuchi of the Hidden Stone and Chōjūrō of the Hidden Mist, who manage to restrain him temporarily.
In terms of abilities, Kinshiki is a physically dominant fighter. His superhuman strength is immense, allowing him to shatter the ground of the Chunin Exam arena, casually restrain the full Eight-Tailed Beast, and trade powerful blows with Sasuke's Susanoo. He possesses incredible durability, withstanding attacks from top-tier ninja. Beyond his raw physical prowess, Kinshiki has the unique ability to manipulate his chakra to materialize a variety of solid, red-glowing weapons, including axes, blades, and kanabō, which he wields with masterful skill. He is also capable of flight and, in the anime adaptation, can use Space-Time Ninjutsu to open portals and travel between dimensions. He follows the Ōtsutsuki tradition of power transference through consumption, having gained strength from his own guardian in the past before sacrificing himself for Momoshiki in the same manner.
