Description
Kurama is the nine-tailed beast, a colossal fox-like entity composed of chakra, who resides within the body of Naruto Uzumaki. In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Kurama remains an integral but transformed presence, having shifted from a source of destructive power to a trusted partner and mentor figure.

Background: Kurama’s origins as one of the nine tailed beasts date back to the era of the Sage of Six Paths. For centuries, he was regarded as a natural disaster and a weapon of war, sealed within humans who treated him as a tool. His bond with Naruto Uzumaki, forged through years of struggle and mutual understanding, culminates in Kurama willingly cooperating with Naruto, offering his chakra freely and becoming a partner rather than a prisoner.

Personality: By the time of Boruto, Kurama has shed nearly all of his former bitterness and misanthropy. He is gruff and pragmatic, often displaying dry humor and impatience with foolishness, but he is no longer cruel or murderous. He shows genuine concern for Naruto and his family, though he expresses it in a blunt, no-nonsense manner. Kurama values strategy over brute force, and his long experience makes him a perceptive observer of both combat and human nature.

Motivations: Kurama’s primary motivation is the protection of Naruto, who has become not only his jinchuriki but also his closest companion. He also cares for the well-being of the Hidden Leaf Village and Naruto’s family by extension. Kurama seeks to use his power responsibly, reversing his earlier desire to sow chaos. He is driven by a sense of loyalty and a quiet desire to atone for his past rampages.

Role in the story: Kurama acts as Naruto’s inner voice and strategic advisor. He helps Naruto manage his duties as the Seventh Hokage while remaining ready for combat. Kurama’s role becomes critical during the battle against Isshiki Otsutsuki, where he reveals the existence of a final, forbidden ability: Baryon Mode. This technique consumes Kurama’s own life force to generate unprecedented power, and Kurama willingly sacrifices himself to give Naruto a fighting chance against Isshiki. Following this, Kurama dies, leaving Naruto permanently deprived of the Nine-Tails’ chakra and the abilities that came with it.

Key relationships: Kurama’s most important relationship is with Naruto Uzumaki, evolving from mutual hatred to profound friendship and mutual sacrifice. He respects Naruto’s wife Hinata and shows a cautious tolerance toward Boruto and Himawari, seeing them as extensions of Naruto’s will. Kurama has no direct relationship with other tailed beasts in Boruto’s era apart from their shared history, though his bond with them was positive after Naruto united them.

Development: Over the course of the series, Kurama transitions from a rage-filled beast who attempted to destroy Konoha to a self-sacrificing guardian. His final act—giving his life to save Naruto—represents the completion of his arc: embracing empathy, trust, and selflessness. He dies at peace, knowing Naruto will continue to protect the world they both now cherish.

Notable abilities: Kurama possesses immense chakra reserves, capable of generating a tailed beast bomb and enhancing Naruto’s physical abilities, sensory perception, and regenerative healing. In Boruto, his most notable ability is Baryon Mode, which functions like nuclear fusion, converting Kurama’s and Naruto’s chakra into a new energy source. This mode dramatically increases speed, strength, and reflexive combat ability, while rapidly shortening the lifespans of both Kurama and the opponent it touches. Kurama also retains the ability to communicate telepathically with Naruto and to manifest outside Naruto’s body for collaborative attacks.
