Description
Masato Kageura, 18, captains the B-rank Kageura Squad (formerly A-rank) and ranks among Border's most formidable Attackers. His lanky frame features light skin, wild black hair, amber slit-pupil eyes, and jagged teeth often concealed by a surgical mask worn on his chin to mitigate his Side Effect's impact by reducing exposed skin. He typically wears a black sweater—frequently high-collared—with jeans or cargo pants and black shoes. His squad uniform is a distinctive double-breasted black military jacket with five buttons, epaulettes, and collar insignia, paired with gray cargo pants and combat boots.

Kageura's aggressive, volatile personality stems partly from his Side Effect: Emotion Perception. This ability translates others' emotions toward him into physical sensations on his skin, with negative emotions causing painful prickling. Constant discomfort fuels his disdain for the ability and short temper. He reacts violently to insults, exemplified by decapitating two trainees for negative remarks behind his back. While avoiding harm to real bodies, he openly threatens provokers and gives minimal warnings before violence. Despite belligerence, he demonstrates fierce squad loyalty and a straightforward demeanor peers like Kō Murakami call "simple and real." He occasionally unnerves onlookers with non-violent intimidation following outbursts.

Emotion Perception serves as a tactical combat asset. It detects hostile intent and direction, making him virtually immune to ambushes or snipers by anticipating strikes without conventional senses. It even predicts trajectories of rapid-fire projectiles. Only Yūma Kuga and Haruaki Azuma evade detection due to emotionless combat. Combined with reflexes, this makes defeating him in group engagements exceptionally difficult.

Kageura specializes in Scorpion, ranking among Border's top users. His signature Mantis technique merges two Scorpions into elongated blades for mid-range whiplash attacks that curve around obstacles or rapidly slash multiple targets. He employs advanced variations like Branch Blade, generating multiple blades from different body points for evasion or counterattacks. His combat parameters include high Attack (12) and Skill (9) ratings, totaling 51. He rarely uses Bagworm or Shield, preferring relentless offense, though his Full Guard withstands heavy fire from elites like Masataka Ninomiya and Hyuse. In solo matches, he holds a slight victory edge over Yūma Kuga (52.4%) and a notable advantage over Kō Murakami (59.5%), cementing his reputation despite Murakami considering him superior.

Initially, Kageura approaches rank wars with minimal strategy, prioritizing personal enjoyment by engaging foes like Yūma. He neglects reviewing opponents' combat logs unless intrigued, causing oversights like unawareness of Chika Amatori's refusal to shoot people. When teammate Ema commits to the away mission, Kageura shifts his leadership style, making concerted efforts to guide his squad. This adjustment briefly hampers his performance during a strategic match, but he persists in supporting Ema's goals, demonstrating newfound dedication despite setbacks.
