TV Special
Description
Megumi Tadokoro is a student of the 92nd Generation at Totsuki Culinary Academy and a resident of the Polar Star Dormitory, specifically room 302. She hails from a small port town in the Tohoku region, where her family runs a traditional Japanese inn and restaurant called Shoukeien. Growing up idolizing her mother, the inn's head chef, Megumi was determined to help preserve her family's legacy. When the aging staff could no longer prepare the inn's signature goosefish dish, she took it upon herself to master the demanding traditional hanging cut technique from local fishermen, saving the inn's reputation at a young age. Her mother, recognizing her talent, encouraged her to attend Totsuki Academy to further hone her skills, despite Megumi's initial reluctance to leave home.

Physically, Megumi is petite with a slim build, standing 154 cm tall. She has long, dark blue hair that she typically wears in twin braided pigtails, secured with a flower hairpin on the right side, and possesses yellow or amber eyes with a gentle, downward-curving shape. Her casual clothing consists of simple blouses, though she is most often seen in the standard Totsuki uniform or a plain white chef's jacket. After the major team shokugeki arc, her appearance changes slightly as she begins wearing her hair in a single braided ponytail.

At the start of the series, Megumi's personality is defined by extreme timidity, low self-esteem, and a tendency to panic under pressure. She suffers from severe stage fright and demophobia, a fear of crowds, which consistently hinders her ability to perform despite her genuine culinary skill. This anxiety caused her to earn poor grades throughout her middle school years, leading her to enter the high school division ranked at the very bottom of her class and facing an official warning that one more unsatisfactory grade would result in immediate expulsion. When nervous, she has a distinctive habit of tracing the kanji character for person on her palm and making a motion as if to swallow it, a self-soothing ritual. When flustered or excited, she also tends to revert to speaking in her native Hokkaido dialect.

Despite these insecurities, Megumi is fundamentally a kind, honest, and nurturing individual who always speaks in a polite and thoughtful manner. She is deeply family-oriented and looks out for others, often putting their needs before her own. Her core motivation throughout the series is to improve her cooking abilities enough to one day return to her hometown and successfully run her mother's inn. This aspiration is the root of her distinctive culinary philosophy, which is best described as hospitality. She was taught by her mother to think of someone special to her whenever she cooks, believing that this imbues her dishes with warmth and emotional resonance. This approach aims not just to delight the palate but to comfort the diner, evoking feelings of familial love and nostalgia.

Megumi's role in the story is inextricably linked to the protagonist, Soma Yukihira. They are partnered together for their first high school cooking assignment under the stern instructor Roland Chapelle. When their dish is sabotaged, Soma's quick thinking and creative problem-solving save them, earning a rare high grade and forging a close bond between them. This partnership is the catalyst for her entire character arc. She becomes Soma's closest friend and frequent assistant, often helping him research recipes and develop new dishes while learning from his fearless and innovative approach to cooking. Her relationship with Soma helps her gradually break through her self-imposed limitations and discover the joy of cooking. She also shares a close friendship with the other female residents of the Polar Star Dormitory, particularly Yuki Yoshino, and is well-regarded by her peers for her gentle nature.

Megumi's most significant development begins during the Totsuki Friendship and Rapport Training Camp. After being summarily fired by the alumnus and Elite Ten member Kojiro Shinomiya for altering his recipe, Soma challenges him to a shokugeki to defend her. Though Soma loses, Megumi's own cooking in the duel is so heartfelt and full of hospitality that it moves the cold Shinomiya to tears, leading him to rescind her expulsion. This victory, though technically a loss, gives her the first major boost in confidence. She later qualifies for the prestigious Autumn Election, advancing from the preliminary block and making it to the quarter-finals where she loses to the prodigious Ryo Kurokiba. Despite the loss, her performance impresses even the academy's director, Senzaemon Nakiri, who recognizes her immense hidden potential. Another pivotal moment occurs during her stagiaire, an external internship, where she works alongside the initially cold Erina Nakiri. Megumi's sharp observation and a simple but brilliant suggestion to let customers choose their sauce portion earn Erina's respect and help change their dynamic from distant classmates to genuine friends and rivals.

Over time, the influence of Soma, Shinomiya, and her own experiences transforms her. While she retains her kind and slightly anxious core, she develops a newfound resilience and confidence. She learns to channel her nervous energy into focused determination, a state sometimes referred to as her Sports Shoujo Manga Mode. As a member of the rebel team in the Regiment de Cuisine, she bravely faces off against a powerful member of the Elite Ten, fighting to a narrow defeat but earning the respect of her opponent. Following the rebels' victory, Megumi is appointed as the Tenth Seat of the Elite Ten Council, a testament to her incredible growth from the class dunce. In this role, she travels the world to refine her skills, further honing her hospitality technique to an even higher level of sophistication.

Megumi's notable abilities are centered on her expertise in local and vegetable cuisine, often referred to as her speciality of Légumes. Her signature technique is the hanging cut, a traditional method she learned in her childhood for preparing goosefish. Her cooking is consistently described as warm, peaceful, and evocative, with her secret weapon being the ability to create a profound sense of nostalgic comfort in those who eat her food. Beyond the kitchen, she is an exceptionally talented table tennis player, having turned down a scholarship to a sports-focused middle school to attend Totsuki. Known as the Tohoku's Leaping Rabbit, she displays an intense, focused, and competitive personality when playing that contrasts sharply with her usual demeanor.
