Description
Magane Chikujōin is a fictional character originating from the biographical light novel series Record of the Night Window Demon, specifically appearing as the primary antagonist in the fifth volume storyline titled the Sōgenkyū Murder Case. Within that narrative, she is a seventeen-year-old female student responsible for the deaths of all the pupils at Kurozuka Pass Academy.

Physically, Magane possesses a distinctive and memorable appearance. She has deep purple hair styled into braids and features cat-like golden eyes with vertical pupils, complemented by prominent sharp canine teeth. Her typical attire consists of a black and red sailor-style school uniform that incorporates elements reminiscent of onmyōdō, the traditional Japanese esoteric cosmology. She accessorizes with bird-shaped earrings, a brass-colored necklace, black gloves marked with a red pentagram symbol, and red-and-black striped stockings worn with brown round-toed shoes. Her face is almost always adorned with a light, unsettling smile, an expression so constant that it can obscure what is otherwise considered a naturally beautiful appearance.

The core of Magane's character is her profoundly free-spirited, hedonistic, and anarchic personality. She operates entirely according to her own whims, with a stated motto of laugh and enjoy. She is a self-described compulsive liar who claims to feel uncomfortable when not deceiving others, and she takes genuine pleasure in using lies and trickery to manipulate, confuse, harm, or even kill those around her, viewing these acts as a form of entertainment. Her actions are not guided by conventional notions of good or evil but solely by whether she finds a situation interesting or amusing. When she becomes genuinely angered, however, her perpetual smile fades away, and her voice takes on a noticeably colder and more threatening quality. Other characters within the story perceive her as profoundly inhuman, with one describing her as a lie wrapped in human skin, a comment Magane herself takes as the highest compliment.

Magane possesses a singular and extraordinarily powerful ability called the Infinite Deception of Words. This power allows her to permanently alter reality by transforming her lies into truth, but it operates under a very specific condition: the target of the lie must explicitly deny it. If a person verbally and clearly states that Magane's claim is a lie, the cause-and-effect relationship reverses, and the falsehood becomes a permanent reality, bending the laws of the world to accommodate it. Simple doubt or skepticism is insufficient; the denial must be direct and unequivocal. She can apply this ability not only through spoken words but also through written statements, which expands her tactical options considerably. The effects of her power are lasting and can be used to achieve various outcomes, such as summoning non-existent creatures like the Hounds of Tindalos, nullifying another character's special abilities, or even stealing those abilities for herself.

Upon being brought into the real world, Magane refuses to align herself with any of the existing factions, choosing instead to pursue her own desires for chaos and amusement. One of her first acts is to test the limits of her power on an innocent person, demonstrating her casual cruelty. She eventually locates her own creator, the author who wrote her story, and attempts to negotiate changes to her narrative backstory. When this fails to produce results she finds satisfying, she uses the Infinite Deception of Words to force the author to take her own life, effectively ending her original story and freeing herself from any narrative constraints. She also develops a taste for milk after drinking it in her deceased creator's home, eventually stocking her own refrigerator with cartons of it.

Throughout the series, she plays a key role in escalating conflict by manipulating the knight Alicetaria February. After the magical girl Mamika Kirameki dies, Magane twists the dying girl's final words, leading Alicetaria to falsely believe the mage Meteora Österreich was responsible for the death. This deception directly fuels a major confrontation between the characters. She also engages in a chaotic fight with the swordsman Yūya Mirokuji, during which she uses her ability to temporarily steal his spiritual companion, Hangaku. Her interactions with Yūya are notable outside of the story as well, as the Japanese voice actors for the two characters are married to each other, leading fans to refer to their on-screen battles as couple quarrels.

Despite her seemingly villainous nature, Magane's role in the climax is crucial. During the final event, the Elimination Chamber Festival, she agrees at Alicetaria's request to act independently and make the proceedings more interesting. She uses her power to manipulate the creator character Sōta Mizushino, forcing him to admit his own perceived inability to help. This act of denial triggers her ability, effectively bypassing the usual requirements for audience acceptance and allowing the manifestation of the character Setsuna Shimazaki in the real world. After this pivotal moment, Magane loses interest in the outcome. She leaves the festival grounds before it concludes and is last seen departing the country, presumably to find new forms of amusement elsewhere. According to statements from the original creator of Re:CREATORS, Magane eventually loses her reality-altering powers, much like the character Meteora does after the world is stabilized. Her further adventures, however, are chronicled as the protagonist of the spin-off manga titled Chikujōin-san Overdoing It.
