Description
Kaname Sengoku is a professional ballroom dancer and an instructor at the Ogasawara Dance Studio. He is a young man, twenty-four years old, who stands notably tall at 191 centimeters, or approximately six feet three inches. Sengoku possesses a strong, muscular build developed through his years of training. He has short, cream-colored hair that is usually styled in a spiked, upright fashion, and his eyes are brown and often appear half-lidded. His casual attire frequently consists of various shirts and trousers paired with biker boots, while at the studio he wears more practical dance clothes. When competing, he gels his hair back and may wear eyeliner and lip balm, complementing his partner with flamboyant and sometimes erotic costumes.

Sengoku is a world-renowned dancer who specializes in Latin dance and holds championship titles in both the Latin and Ten Dance categories. His abilities are considered world-class, having dominated the amateur Latin title for five consecutive years before turning professional at the age of twenty-one. He started dancing at the age of thirteen and was born in California, USA, which leads to speculation that he is a kikokushijo, a Japanese citizen who was raised overseas and later returned to Japan.

His personality is often brash, tactless, and forward, as he tends to speak his mind without much concern for the feelings of others. He can appear careless and irresponsible, as demonstrated when he wasted a significant amount of prize money on hostesses, which led to a prolonged conflict with his dance partner. Despite this seemingly callous exterior, Sengoku also exhibits a caring and protective side, particularly towards those he takes under his wing. He shows genuine concern for his students, such as when he comforted a distraught Tatara Fujita after a competition and covered his ears to prevent him from hearing disappointing results. He is a demanding mentor with high expectations, believing in pushing his students to discover their full potential through discipline and intense effort. His teaching style is rigorous and fast-paced, often involving blunt critiques mixed with a degree of teasing.

Sengoku serves as the first major mentor to the protagonist, Tatara Fujita. Their initial meeting occurs when Sengoku rescues Tatara from bullies and subsequently brings him to the Ogasawara Dance Studio. Though his initial intention was simply to get rid of the curious boy, he was compelled to take Tatara on as a student after witnessing his earnest effort and determination. Even though Sengoku is an active competitor with a busy schedule of overseas tournaments, limiting the amount of time he can personally instruct Tatara, his influence is profound. He provides foundational lessons in posture and presence, lends Tatara his own old costume, and even creates a special choreography to help Tatara and his partner stand out in competition. Sengoku’s role evolves from a reluctant teacher to a constant, if unconventional, source of support and inspiration.

His key relationships include his partnership with Chizuru Hongou, with whom he competes professionally. Their partnership is volatile and marked by intense conflict, such as their extended fight over his financial irresponsibility, but it is also a cornerstone of his professional life. His relationship with Tatara is central to his role in the story; he is a critical figure who shapes Tatara’s foundational skills and attitude toward dance. There is also a noted history between Sengoku and the competitive dancer Masami Kugimiya, as Kugimiya was constantly compared to Sengoku during their junior years, a comparison that contributed to Kugimiya’s psychological distress and dislike for the sport.

Throughout the narrative, Sengoku begins as an active professional who reluctantly takes on a teaching role. His development is shown through his growing, if unspoken, investment in Tatara’s progress. His mentorship demonstrates a shift from pure self-interest to a genuine dedication to nurturing the next generation of dancers, proving that behind his flamboyant and egotistical exterior lies a devoted artist and teacher who refuses to accept mediocrity.
