Description
Gaju Akagi is a major character introduced as a sixteen-year-old first-year high school student. He was born in the Gunma Prefecture and later moves to Tokyo to attend high school and receive more advanced dance training, living with his uncle. Gaju has a tall, muscular, and athletic physique that gives him an imposing presence on the dance floor. He has bright orange hair and eyes that are a few shades darker, with a strong upper body and slim waist.

Personality-wise, Gaju is brash, demanding, and hot-blooded, often coming across as a loud-mouthed and aggressive individual. His fiery nature makes him speak his mind freely and act impulsively, leading to confrontational behavior, especially toward rivals like Tatara Fujita. He is a perfectionist who holds high expectations for both himself and his partner, and he is driven by a deep-seated need to be the best. Despite his abrasive exterior, he has a complex sense of honor, as he initially hates "wimpy athletes" but will defend a fellow dancer like Tatara from bullies as his senior. He speaks with a Joshu dialect, which is native to Gunma Prefecture.

Gaju's motivations are rooted in a long history with dance and a powerful competitive spirit. He began dancing at the age of six at the request of his younger sister, Mako Akagi, who wanted to spend time with him. While he initially disliked the activity and found it frustrating, his natural gifts and inability to accept losing drove him to master it. Over ten years, he and Mako became a formidable pair in Latin dance, known nearly as much as the top junior couple, Kiyoharu Hyoudou and Shizuku Hanaoka. However, as they grew, Gaju felt held back by Mako's more passive and gentle style, believing she could not keep up with his spirited and powerful dancing. He also harbors a long-standing and very upfront attraction to Shizuku Hanaoka, having admired her since childhood.

Gaju's primary role in the story is as a catalyst for conflict and a rival to the protagonist, Tatara Fujita. When Kiyoharu Hyoudou is injured, preventing him from competing, Gaju seizes the opportunity to fulfill his ambition by becoming Shizuku's new partner, effectively abandoning Mako. This act creates a major rift and leads to a direct challenge from Tatara, who partners with Mako. The central conflict of the Tenpei Cup arc revolves around a bet Gaju makes with Tatara: if Mako and Tatara can win against him and Shizuku, Gaju must admit his sister's talent and return as her partner.

His key relationships are complex and highly influential on his growth. With Mako Akagi, his younger sister and original partner, the bond is both familial and professional. He is harsh and critical of her, yelling at her for being too passive, yet his decision to leave her is not out of malice but a misguided belief that he needs a stronger partner to win. Deep down, he cares for her success, and watching her bloom with another partner forces him to confront his own shortcomings as a brother. With Shizuku Hanaoka, his temporary partner, he is initially driven by infatuation and the desire for a technically superior dancer. Their partnership is powerful but lacks the emotional ease of his sibling relationship, and Shizuku often has to manage his emotional volatility. With Tatara Fujita, Gaju starts as a dismissive and intimidating senior, but Tatara's unexpected growth and ability to bring out Mako's potential earn Gaju's grudging respect, turning their rivalry into one that pushes both dancers to improve.

Gaju undergoes notable development, particularly during and after the Tenpei Cup. He begins with the arrogant belief that he is superior to his sister and that she is holding him back. When he sees Tatara, a beginner, succeed in making Mako shine on the dance floor, he experiences a powerful emotional shock that causes him to lose focus during a competition. This moment forces him to recognize that his aggressive leading style was not unlocking Mako's potential but suppressing it. Losing the bet, though he technically wins the competition, humbles him. He honors his word and returns as Mako's partner, acknowledging that he was wrong to abandon her and that true partnership involves mutual growth, not just individual prowess.

In terms of notable abilities, Gaju is an exceptionally skilled and experienced dancer with a decade of training. His dance style is characterized by power, control, and sharp, dynamic movements. He possesses a strong, athletic frame that allows him to execute difficult maneuvers and project a commanding presence. However, his initial lack of emotional nuance and tendency to dominate his partner are technical flaws he must learn to overcome. Despite his strength, his journey shows that raw ability and ambition must be balanced with empathy and genuine connection to achieve true excellence in competitive dance.
