Description
Miyu Sakatsuki is a central figure in the story of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya: Vow in the Snow, serving as the emotional anchor for the narrative. Originally named Miyu Sakatsuki, she belongs to the ancient Sakatsuki family and is a Child of God, a being born with the innate ability to grant any wish. This power makes her a perfect Holy Grail, capable of realizing desires indiscriminately, which draws the attention of mages and other factions.

Her background is one of isolation. She was raised in careful seclusion within the Sakatsuki household, given only a limited education and no contact with other children, relying solely on her mother. This upbringing left her with a deep ignorance of the outside world and underdeveloped social skills, despite possessing advanced book knowledge in subjects like physics and mathematics. When a catastrophic disaster consumed her hometown, she was discovered by Kiritsugu Emiya and his adoptive son, Shirou Emiya. Kiritsugu saw her only as a tool to save the world, but Shirou gradually treated her as a human being, forming a sibling-like bond with her. Over time, she used her own wish-granting power to make herself and Shirou real siblings, cementing their connection.

In terms of personality, Miyu is serious, rational, and initially reserved. She takes her responsibilities very seriously and approaches both daily life and battle with a calculated mindset. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a deep emotional need for connection. Her first true friendship in the main series is with Illyasviel von Einzbern, whom she becomes intensely protective of, valuing that bond above all else. This devotion extends to Shirou as well; she is willing to sacrifice everything for his and Illya's happiness. Her strength of will is remarkable, granting her a determination that remains unshaken even in the face of lethal threats.

Her motivations in Vow in the Snow are rooted in her desire for a normal, happy life with Shirou. She wants to experience the world beyond her confinement, such as seeing the ocean, and she wishes to be with her brother. When the Ainsworth family kidnaps her to use her as a sacrifice in their version of the Fifth Holy Grail War, she becomes the prize that Shirou fights to rescue. Her role in the story is that of the protected younger sister, but also the catalyst for Shirou's journey from an ordinary student into a mage who defies the dark path his father intended. The climax of the film centers on Shirou using the Archer class card to wish for Miyu to be transported to a different world where she can find happiness, a wish that she herself accepts as the only way to protect him.

As a magical girl, Miyu partners with the Kaleidostick Magical Sapphire, which grants her an unlimited mana supply and the ability to fire high-density mana bullets, create mana blades for melee combat, and perform high-output blasts. Unlike Illya, she cannot fly; instead, she creates solid footholds in the air with mana, allowing for quick linear movements. She also gains the ability to embody the Saber class card, a skill she develops after witnessing Illya do the same. Her combat style emphasizes speed and overwhelming firepower, and she is highly proficient in transforming and using her abilities from the outset.

Key relationships define her character arc. Her bond with Shirou Emiya is the foundation of her humanity; he is the one who taught her that she is not merely a tool, and she loves him as a true brother. With Illyasviel von Einzbern, she forms her first friendship, a deep and almost obsessive attachment that grows into mutual trust and protection. Her relationship with Kiritsugu Emiya is strained, as he views her as a weapon, but she respects him nonetheless. The Ainsworth family, particularly Julian Ainsworth, are her antagonists, seeking to exploit her power at the cost of her life.

Throughout Vow in the Snow, Miyu undergoes little overt change herself—she remains largely passive as a captive—but her presence drives the transformation in Shirou. The film shows her origins and her deep-seated wish for a peaceful life with her brother, which ultimately comes true, albeit at the cost of their separation. Her character development continues in the broader Prisma Illya series, where she learns to open up further, but even in this prequel, her quiet strength and longing for normalcy are clearly established. Her notable ability, the wish-granting power of the Child of God, is both her greatest blessing and her greatest curse, making her a target for those who would use her for their own ends.
